sorrel's thread on a pond in colder climates inspired this question

i live in arizona, and in the summers here, temps get well into the triple digits (100-115 F is pretty average). i someday do plan to live somewhere with a yard and would like to keep a pond. though its years off, the thought occured to me, just how warm of water can goldfish/koi tolerate? are there chiller systems for ponds? or would i have to bring the fish indoors then like people elsewhere do with theirs in the winters?????????????

any thoughts???

They do not cope well when the water starts to reach tropical tank temps and with this in the long term it could affect other aspects of the pond. I know chillers can and are used for such things but I have no experience with them, I think ste2k3 knows something about them though.

I live about 4 hours n. of pheonix and is the 2nd hottest and sometimes the hottest place in the US(next to Death valley) I have a small pond in which i keep koi, goldfish, mesquito fish, native fish, and tropicla fish that I put in during the summertime that breed like crazy! Thats one of a few reasons i like to live in AZ is because you can breed tropical fish in your backyard! From 3 parent sailfin mollies...i have around 300 fry from about 4 months of life in the pond. i have to bring them in for the winter of course...But as long as you have shade and about 12 to 28" of pond depth, the fish and whatever else should be fine! :D

i cant see why the fish wouldnt be ok if bought localy, try and keep the water moving constantly to lower the temp on hot days and add plenty of plants for shade ,a pal of mine in south africa uses a cooler but he reckons it really struggles to maintain the tempratures on warm days which over there is most of them ,but he finds the fish dont suffer becouse he added a stream to fill the pond from a sump, his pond is also quite deep at 5ft allowing the lower levels to remain cool
