Hi

I've got a 20G Juwel tank (as my sig says!) but I was just wondering if the filter that automatically comes built in is supposed to be able to support the whole system. Does anyone have one who could give me advice? I've never had a problem with it (except I need a new motor which is falling to pieces!) I just wanted to know if I could be doing a better job for my fish.

Oh and does anyone know where I can get a new motor for it from? ;)

yes, the juwel filters should be OK for the whole tank, but you can never overfilter a tank, so if you want to add another filter, it's not going to hurt!!! I run the standard juwel filter on my tank along with a fluval 204 external filter which should be enough for the tank on it's own!!!

Juwel have a website which is www.juwel-aquarium.com. I've never been on there but they may have a spares section or it'll tell you where you can get supplies from.

Worth a go?

i have a rio 120.
the filter is perfectly fine and dose the job its designed to do. :D
the only thing i've added is a green spong (nitrate remover).
these are available at any good lfs, as is a replacement powerhead.
my power head is the 600 model, when it needs replacing I will proberbly get the next size up, other than that I am very happy with this filter. :D

:p jewel tanks are designed with those filters to work on a normal tank, ie rio 240 filled with normal commi fish and will cope well. on mine because i have some larger than normal fish i have the jewel filter plus 4 external filters i have over 6000 litres an hour being recycled on a 400 litr tank so as they say you can never have to much filtration...

I have the Juwel Rekord 96 and although I think that the filtration is ok (good amount of filtermedia etc) I don't think that enough oxygen gets into the tank, so I've also added a Hagen Fluval Plus 1 for better circulation and water surface movement.

I've tried just turning the outlet nozzel upwards to create more bubbles but water ends up running down the outside of the tank 'cos there's no condensation tray.

Well im gonna spoil the party and say what i think, JUWEL FILTERS ARE A LOAD OF CRAP!!!! They are awkward to clean and become bunged up with gunk which you cannot see or get at easily to remove, the only way to clean them is to stick a syphon into filter casing and suck all the crap out. Because they get full of gunk they start to become nitrate factories and send the levels in the tank soaring, for years i had hair algea problems associated with high nitrates but once i ripped out the juwel filters from the rio 300 and rekord 120 we have the nitrate problems went away. I have spoken with the rep from juwel while he was visiting a lfs and he told me that the problem i have had is a common one as the filters are not designed with heavily stocked tanks in mind, the whole juwel tank system is designed for planted tanks with just a few small fish. Now i know this i wont ever buy a juwel tank again, if it is a fish only tank that you want it actually works out cheaper to buy seperates, my 205 gallon tank with 2 external eheims, single light tube and 2 heaters only came to £500, of course it would have cost more if i had to buy a stand and hood rather than build my own and i spent a bit extra on perspex covers to stop evepouration but it is nearly twice the size of a rio 400 at near enough the same price, make your own mind up what the better deal is.

What is this called? Where can you get it?
any lfs that stocks juwel products should have or can get this for you.
I dont know the proper name but it is green and it removes nitrates,
Just ask in your lfs. :D

Thanks everyone, sorry haven't checked this thread for ages, thought it was dead! I have had my juwel filter for 5 years now and yes I have had an algae problem the whole time, although it has been pretty reliable otherwise. It is a Juwel Rekord 96 just like yours adcs. I have just planted my tank up today so perhaps all those extra nitrates will help my plants grow :D

if they say it was designed for a 'Planted tank' then that is to be taken with a pinch of salt :) as the lighting is always insufficient !!! Also in the smaller tanks (Rekord) the reflector faces the front so most of the light reflects on the front glass.

I have had to purchase additional ballast, hood and lamps to get the whole system to become a planted tank that works.

Otherwise they are good tanks and look good too...
