Juwel Size Discrepancies?

Hi everyone

I recently decided to start looking for a bigger tank than my current 3ft 30 gal, but have some questions regarding the larger juwel tanks.

When I do the capacity calculations for the Juwel rio 240/300/400 and 260/450 visions, i get different capacities to the suggested name, i.e. inputting the dimensions for the rio 300 (121x62x51) gives 383ltrs? or 84/101gal.

Have juwel called this the 300 to suggest the "real" volume, when not filled to brim and with substrate etc? I only ask because an extra 83 litres is a big bonus!

Also, with the visions (260 and 450), is the depth measurement from the centre of the bow to the back, or along the sides? It would obviously affect the volume measurements.

I'm torn over whats my best option - it will be in my groundfloor bedroom - so the extra volume of the still 4ft rio 300 might be invaluable.

Thanks for any help anyone can give - does anyone own one of these tanks and can give me an idea of the "real" capacity?

Not sure It did the same to my Juwel Lido.

PFK have a calculator that roughly works it out as if you had substrate and stuff in.

I think its due to the fact that Juwel provides and internal filter, which takes up quite abit of volume, also I thinkt the measurements Juwel say, include space that isnt filled with water, eg. the hood.
I have 2 Juwel tanks a rio 180 and a vision 260. Just measured the rio, from the bottom of the tank (I have about 15" in water depth - To be fair, I dont have it to the maximum fill point, and my ruler won't go down to the bottom of the tank, so realistically I think I could have about 17-18" of water in there, which is 2 inches off what Juwel says is a 20" height.

EDIT: my vision 260 is just over 12" at the far sides, yet on the website it says 46cm (18") so I'm guessing its the middle of the tank width.

the volume of any mass produced tank (not just Juwel) is the total volume of air the tank holds

The juwel dimensions are external measurements inc the the plastic frame so reduce the sizes by 10mm (1cm) on the width and depth and around 50mm (5cm) on the hight, the displacement from the filter is not a lot as its full of water anyway (no more than 2-3 liters) as for the substrate it depends on the depth and material (sand/gravel)

hope this helps

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I thought it might be something to do with the full measurements so people can measure up accordingly. Shroob, you say you have a rio 180 and vision 260 - whats your opinion on the shapes i.e. rectangle vs. bow?

As i mentioned I'm a bit torn between the rio 240/300 and vision 260 and would like some opinions on them. Does the bow ever distort the view when not looking at it straight?

Also, the cheapest I can find each of the above is £295 for rio 240 with cabinet, and £395 and £380 for rio 300 and vision 260 respectively(with cabinets). Is the extra volume of the rio 300 (roughly 100litres or so - depending on the calculations!) worth the extra £100 (~$200)? Or is the bow of the 260 worth the extra £100 over the rio 240?

Thanks for all your help guys - finding this website has been invaluable!

(p.s. I'm not 100% stuck on juwel but i do like the all in one package - especially now they have the "high-lite" units in the new rio's and visions. I know filtration isn't the best (I own a juwel currently) but i have a tetratec ex1200 on my current set up which will be moving accross also.)
