Im considering a Juwel Rio 180 as a possible Marine setup

What else should I be looking at adding to this setup, (other than backing, substrate & decor) to keep Marine's in

Probably a few clown fish to start off with

Is undergravel filter recommend (normal flow or reverse flow) I believe the filtration that comes with the Rio 180, isnt really enough on its own for Marine

Steve

Steve..help us out here...how many gallons? Undergravel filters are dinosauric. OUT. Powerheads, live rock, live sand IN. SH

The tank is 180 Litres, not sure what that equates to in Gallons about 47 US Gallons I think

With not using an UGF, how deep should the substrate be (probably a medium to fine coral gravel)

and what other filtration should I be looking at?

Steve

substrate should be a couple of inches deep, any more and you will start to get anaerobic zones.
keep the internal filter as a place for the heater and any chemical media - ie phosphate remover etc.

your main filtration will be the live rock, you will need somewhere around 25kg.
keep the powerhead in the internal filter, and add at least 2 more to give a flow of at least 10x tank volume per hour.

p.s. i used to run an UGF and it was awesome - until I had to move the tank and clean it out. don't knock the old ways, they can be very effective. They're just a pain when they go wrong.
