how many filters are ment to be in these inbuilt filter things?

im about to start setting up my tank, and im not sure.

at mo there is a black filter in there, a green one, and a thin white pad thing under the pump.

that all i need?

Hi Rob and Welcome to TFF!

If I'm remembering right I believe Juwel sell black sponges (impregnated with carbon, which is a chemical media), green sponges (supposedly to remove nitrate but of course that's never been a thing that can be done in any reasonable manner), blue sponges (probably their version of a coarser sponge (picks up larger debris) and finally white sponges (meant to pick up finer debris.) The advantage of buying their sponges is probably that they are precut to the correct size and shape.

The only things that us hobbyists feel you actually need on a regular basis are the blue and white ones. These sponges will fulfill two of the three main functions of a filter: biological and mechanical filtration. Mechanical is the one you already know about, catching debris, pretty obvious. Biological is the "magic" one involving two specific species of bacteria and fulfilling the "biological" filtration function. Biological filtration is one of the main learning things that this forum is all about and I hope you'll stick around to discuss it with all the great members here. The third function, chemical filtration, is exemplified by carbon. Its able to pull medications and yellow tannins from wood out of your water but its a specialized thing and should be put in only for those purposes, unless you want to get into the business of replacing it every 3 days (yes three days!) when it is full and ready to be tossed!

Its a great idea to take some time and get your media all worked out just right before you start fishless cycling the tank (there's a whole article about that in our Beginners Resource Center.) Good Luck!

so the green filter i keep, and have a blue one ( that u need to get) below that ?

and remove the black one i have ?

Sounds like a good plan to me! The green one won't really bind many nitrates but it should do fine as a sponge for biomedia. All of these will get squeezed in tank water when you clean the filter.

ok, thanks for the advice. :good:

The white pad won't last long as it will fall apart after a few weeks. You can buy a sheet of filter floss and cut it up - just as good and a lot cheaper.

Hi

I have the juwel rekord 800 and my internal filter contains the blue sponge at the bottom, the green in middle and white wool like filter on the top.

Tbh i really dont rate the Jewel internal filter all too highly but it will be fine for a medium stocked tank

I plan to replace mine soon with an external

anyway back on topic.

There is no need to replace the filter sponges until they fall apart. I personally give each sponge a few sqeezes every water change but i rotate so i am only sqeezing one sponge per water change

The white wool filter media can and should be sqeezed every water change otherwise i have noticed the flow rate of the filter can drop quite a bit. (I replace the white one about every 6 weeks)

Oh and also..Aim the nozzle of the filter upwards so it disturbs the water surface and helps oxygenate the water

Good luck and have fun :good:
