Juwel Rekord 800 Im Thinking of buying this 1st thing 2morow for a community setup is this worth buying as im only on £150 budget for a tank would it be cheaper or would i get better quailty components for around the same price if i bought everything separate anyadvice on tanks filters heaters ect would be great

cheers Dale

id say go for it, or the Rio 125 (better lighting), there good tanks, all i can suggest is you dont use the carbon sponge, and that you replace one of the blue sponges with either cirax or cermaic noodles in a womans nylon

I will m8 cheers im gonna get it set up 2morow do a fishless cycle on im gonna buy argos play sand will that be ok for my tank ?

You take out the carbon (if you want to) as it isnt really needed, carbon is only really useful for removing medication from the water after dosing has finished. You dont have to remove it (unless you are medicating) but its not needed.

You only need to remove the nitrAte sponge (blue one) if you are going to be heavily planting the tank as the plants will use up the nitrate so the sponge isnt needed, however, Im not convinced that the nitrate sponge actually does anything other than act as more media.

Hey truck is that cirax stuff good? saw it the other day and was wondering what it was.

Isnt the Nitrate sponge the top green one

There isnt anything wrong with the carbon sponge, it just isnt needed 24/7. Carbons main use is to remove medication and tannins from the water and it is only effective for about 3/5 days. After this time it will basically just act as another sponge for bacteria to grow on.

Is your tank cycled??

If your tank isnt cycled then dont touch the filter media / sponges for the minute.

If the tank is cycled then I'd recommend cleaning the sponges every 1/2 months in old tank water or when the filter flow is reduced, just give them a gentle squeeze to remove excess gunk when cleaning.

You only need to replace the main filter sponges when they are literally falling apart (ignore the instructions that tell you to replace them every month or so, they are just trying to get you to spend more money)

If you have the thin white filter floss in your filter then you can replace that every 1/2 months, this helps to catch the smaller particles in the water and keep it clear. You can try clean it in old tank water if you want but it is harder to get clean than the normal blue sponges
