hi

I recently posted about my Juwel tank because the bracing bars snapped off. While I was on the phone to Juwel I thought I'd mention a rather annoying little thing that keeps happening - I get small electric shocks off of my lighting!
They are only annoying tickles, like bad static really, but I thought it was about time I came to my senses and considered the danger of getting 'buzzed' by the mains electric with my hands in water.

Juwel advised me to go back to the outlet I bought it at and get them to test the lights to see if they are faulty. The store said that they get this problem quite a lot and that the customer is to blame most of the time as we over-fill the tank and therefore cause condensation to build up on the units!! Also adding new fish raises the level and so does doing maintenance according to them!!!! :hyper:
Please can someone save my sanity and tell me whether this is true or not otherwise I am going to be either getting very angry with them and making a fool of myself if I am wrong. :*)

We never overfill the tank (there doesn't seem to be any room to either) and we never raise the water level during maintenance (personally I tend to take water out to change it BEFORE putting more water in.... )

Does anyone else have trouble with tickly Juwel light units or similar who can shed some light (mind the pun) on this one before I head off down to the shop on the weekend???

P.S. The tank is a Rio 400 and I have changes the clips that hold the light bulbs to metal ones as the plastic ones supplied snapped not that I believe that having metal clips ahould make any difference.

Sounds to me like they are trying to pass the buck! I've never had any shocks off my jewel and I do sometimes overfill it (forget to turn the hose off  )

if a light is failing due to "condensation" it is faulty, and they should replace it for you.

ALL light units approved for aquarium use are sealed. And if the starter unit is built into the hood that has to be properly sealed to meet CE standards!

Don't let the fish shop fob you off telling you its your fault, when it clearly isnt.

The more i see of Juwel aquariums, the less i like them. I have a Rekord 60, and the filtration took me ages to get right. Sometimes it runs slow, sometimes too fast... i have had to do a bit of a bodge joband now it runs fine....

I ended up taking the Rekord 60 internal filter out and dumping it!

Thanks guys. have spoken to an electrician friend and he has suggested that the seals might be shot in the end caps as over time they will cook with the heat of the lights.

I need to replace the tubes anyway as they are now 16 months old and dont look as good as they used to so I will replace the end caps at the same time as they recommend. If this doesn't fix it I will ask our friend to test it before I drive for miles.

Many thanks
