I have a Rio 400 which uses the the Juwel 300w heater.

Last night I'd noticed the temp had dropped to 23C - so on the central heating goes untill I can get a replacement...

This the second heater to pack up in as many years - has anyone else had problems with the juwel heater???

Last time it was after a water change and I assumed it was because part of the heater was exposed to the air  and burnt it out......since then I allways turned the heater off during water changes but I guess this latest one must have packed up during the water change at the weekend but don't know why :/ at nearly £30 a go ... :grr:

Does anyone use other makes and if so which and do you still use it in the slot in the jumbo filter or just stick on the glass normally??

:)

I have a rio 300 and have had the fuses blow on the heater twice in a year for no reason, just noticed the temperature had dropped so checked the heater and there was no power so i changed the fuse and it worked fine.I think the heaters they supply are the bare minimum wattage for the size of tank and running them on max for 5 months of the year puts a strain on them,if it happens to me again i will replace it with a more powerful heater that i can set lower

AFAIK Juwel give a two year guarantee on tanks and accessories so if the heater is breaking why note drop them a note or ring them and see what they have to say. Their site is here - click on Service at the top for contact details, etc.

I have heard of people getting replacements FOC with other manufacturers.

Worth a try.....

Cheers, Eddie

I've got a Rio 300 aswell, its only been set-up for around 2 months, but have'nt had any probs so far...(knocks on wood!!) The heater has always kept the water at a very steady 77F and is still inside the jumbo filter. I also turn off the heater during a water change, if u look, the minimum water level is at the top of the glass part of the heater, so it should always be under the water.

 cheers guys :D

:*) how stupid am I ...... - cfc checked the fuse and guess what.... duh! its working  :*)

Right the new dilema is that I now have a spare 300w heater and no tank to put it in - for some reason the missus didn't think that this was a good enough excuse for getting a new tank  seemed perfectly legitimate reason to me  lol

I just checked my juwel tank temp this morning when I was putting the light on and it had droped from 26C to 22C.

The tank is only about 5months old. I assume the heater is the problem. When I checked it the bottom half is warm but the top half is cold. There is still a light on in the top half. The other thing with this heater is ever since I got it the dial to select the temp spins round more than 360degrees, not just 180 like the markings on the top so I don't know how much to adjust it.

Do you think it is starting to burn out?

 hi lisa sure you will sort the heater problem out ,just a thought should you not disconnect the power from the tank when you do a water change, could give you a nasty shock if you spilled some,i always disconnect completly regards tim fishbie23

yep had juwel for years its the fuses 99% of the time just replace them with a slightly stronger one (found this out after buying 2 new heaters for the same problem ouch expensive)

Mine makes a noise, described in this thread. I got a replacement from the lfs and the new one still does it.

Lisa F - it's normal for the dial to turn >360. Start low and move it up whilst keeping your eye on the temp over the course of say an evening.
