Juwel Heater

yes you can. what makes you think you cant. ?????

perhaps this bit from the instruction manual...

"Installation of the heater without the JUWEL Filter System

In order to allow the installation of the JUWEL Aquarium Automatic Heater we have
provided suction cups together with the heater.
First of all please attach the suction cups to the heater tube.
Thereafter, fasten the heater to the glass pane of your aquarium and check that it is
safely positioned.
You achieve the best result if you remove some of the water from the aquarium
beforehand and clean that part of the glass pane to which you wish to fasten the
heater. Please ensure that the heater is positioned in such a way that the heater head
is above the water level.
Having installed the heater in your aquarium you may refill it again and connect the
heater to the power supply.
Please observe that the heater may be damaged irreversibly, if it is operating without
or in an insufficient level of water."

and.... if you install in with the filter, the setup ensures that the top is above water...

I don't think the things gonna blow if you do, but it must affect it in some way or they would't advise you not to.

got to say you have surprised me with that.
it does not mention any where on the instructions i got with both my Rekord and Rio about having it out the water. the heater in my Rekord 96 has been under the water for years and has never caused a problem. well better do a bit of investigating got to say that has shocked me, never thought to look at juwel web site just assumed it would be the same as what's in my instruction book.

cant acutely see why you would not be allowed to put it under the water it has to be water proof. (you would think ???)

better go eat some humble pie.

Andrew :)

through experience, i would junk the juwel heater. they seem to be inconsistent, in temp regulation, none submersible, it would seem, and they seem to die in the on position. leaving your tank to cook till you notice.

See I think out of all the heaters I have had the juwel ones have been the most reliable the one in Rekord 96 has been going for about 6+ years and has out lived the pump and the light unit.
We do have to bear in mind that the heaters are not made by juwel any more and have gone thought a few revisions so my heater in the Rekord my be able to live under water. I am still looking for the instructions for the Rio heater as I can’t remember it mentioning the above water bit but it is a different design to the one in the Rekord
(Most notably the temp adjustment is black on the Rekord but is green/blue on the Rio)

I bought Juwel Rio last November and it has the blue/green top not black as on their website. It also says on it "Made in Italy by Hydor". Is this new or have they always been made by Hydor without their name being on them?

I think they are the newer range of juwel heaters. The reason why is what my lfs said when I had a problem;

I got my rio180 tank late last year and it came with an all black heater. After getting the tank set up I struggled to keep the temp below 26degC even with the heater on the lowest setting! So after testing the heater in really hot water it remained on. I took it back to the lfs and they agreed that this was faulty and got a replacement boxed juwel heater from the shelf.

I said, will this be any different and he showed me the heater which was a different design, with the temp in numbers and not just a +/- scale, and he said that these are their new heaters as they've brought out some other company (or gone into partnership with them, can't remember) and these new ones are a lot more reliable. Since changing to the new one I've not had a problem.

i have a rekord 60 juwel aquarium on the instructions provided said to slot it into a special holder (provided) all packed in the corner box along with the filter. i read somewhere else tho that vertical heaters dont work as good as horzontal heaters, they were no suction pads with my tank.my heater warms to water to about 25'C and its turned up to full, my room is quite cold tho, it says on the website "The JUWEL automatic heater warms the water of your aquarium up to 28°C
depending on a nomal room temperature of 18°C"my room temp. i would say is around 16'C.

I'll revise my comments in the future! if the new heater is hydor, then things should be much better. only thing for me is, if you don't but the heater in the filter box, it still has to remain upright, hydor heater instructions, insist that the heater needs to be fitted vertically!

My heater is the one with the + and - and it seems to be useless. The control knob just spins round and round and there is no indication of how hot it will get. My seems to like just randomly staying on no matter how much you twist the control towards the -.

I will be taking it back to the shop I think
