Couldn't resist buying a tray earlier today, but I am a bit confused about where it should be placed in the filter tower.

I would have thought, right at the very bottom, but LFS told me it should be in the middle, then someone else told me, it should go on the top.....

ive always done floss, bioballs/ceramic rings, sponge and then some more floss

Middle to bottom.
At the top it would clog up far to quickly and seeing as how this is going to hold a lot of nitrifying bacteria, you don't really want to disturb it much by "cleaning" it lots.
