I don't have a marine tank (though would like one in the distant future when I have the funds) but just wondering why it is necessary to use RO water in marine tanks? And is it an absolute must?

Best to use RO. Tapwater is full of many ingredients on which algae will thrive. Fighting algae is bad enough without exasperating the fact by using Tapwater.

You can use dechlorinated tap water mixed with salt in a marine tank, provided its FO or FOWLR. You can't use dechlorinated tap water in a reef tank as there are too many pollutants that will kill corals and invertebrates, copper being the main one, although fluoride, lead and other heavy metals will kill corals too.

As BigC says, tap water can also feed algaes too, if it contains a source of nitrates.

We measure the quality of R-O in TDS...whcih is the amount of things dissolved in our water. Most of us aim for zero if we keep a reef tank. The tap water TDS near me runs into several hundred!

You can buy barrels of RO from good LFS, Mine run a TDS meter on there so they can prove they are selling good stuff.
