Hi everyone

just thought i would introduce myself, im emily from cheshire in the uk. i have a jewel aquarium - rekord 96 and thought id just let you know which fish i have:

2 x glass fish
2 x rams
2 x pink kissing gourami's
1 x opaline gourami
2 x clown loach
1 x coolie loach
1 x plecostomus
1 x silver shark
1 x red tipped shark
1 x catfish
5 x harlequin tetras
2 x dwarf honey gourami's
4 x guppies

4 x neon tetras
4 x cardinal tetras

the reason why i separate the tetras is because im having major problems with them. They are all dying slowly, they are covered in blisters about 1mm across which seem to have some kind of spore in the middle. they have lost their colour compleatly and have very rapid gill movement. ive had 3 deaths in one week!!! just wondering if anyone else has had these problems at all x

thanks for your help

Hi Emily and welcome :hi:

You will probably be better off separating your welcome and your problem in the different parts of the forum - you will receive many more replies in the emergency section to help you with your fish and the reason they are dying :(

I suspect the main reason might be because you are very overstocked and your tank has high ammonia and nitrite levels. Do you have a test kit and are you able to take your nitrite and ammonia readings ? If you can, nitrate reading would be helpful too.

How long have you had your tanks set up ?
Unfortunately the clown loach, plec (if common or sailfin) and shark will outgrow your tank soon and you might have to think about rehoming them sooner rather than later - or buying a bigger tank soon I'm afraid :(

Perhaps one of the mods can move this thread across for you to the emergency section where you can get some more help. I will pm one of them to ask.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :hi:

I agree with bloozoo2. You are very overstocked for a 24 gallon tank and that is most likely the reason for the problems you are having. Neons and cardinals are not the hardiest of fish and need very good water conditions. If you don't have the kits to test your water, take samples to your fish store and get them to test it for you.

cheers mate, what a nightmare eh?

ive had my tank set up for 6 mths now and not had any probs at all. my plec is only 2 ins big and about the same for my loachesand the shark.

i dont have a test kit but perhaps i should buy one and think about shipping some of the fish which are not my favourites out to the pet shop. perhaps that will help, but i love them all!!!!

talk soon

i think some of my fish are gonna have to go!!!

which ones would you suggest to get rid of?

its the only way as i cant afford to buy a new tank

i did have a problem with my filter a while ago tho, im very new to all this and didnt clean the sponges enough which stopped the motor working and my water became very stagnant and started to smell. as soon as i realised the problem i cleaned them and the filtration system is back on track now!

oh what it is to be an amateur!!!!

:*) :*) :*)

when you say you cleaned the filters what did you do exactly.

if you rinced them under the tap you will have killed all the bacteria on the filter which are essential for a healthy tank.

that is very important, reply ASAP.

If you can't upgrade to a larger tank, then I would suggest returning the pleco, sharks and clown loach for sure. Even at that, you will still be overstocked based on he 1" per gallon rule. It might also be good to get rid of the guppies as they are livebearers so you will hve lots of fry to contend with. Also, depending on what type catfish you have that one may need to go too. A lot of the cats grow to at least a foot long.
