Today I checked Walmart for new bettas, like I do every Wednesday... it seems they might have ordered a few too many. Usually there's one shelf stacked 2 cups high... today they were EVERYWHERE, stretched out over three or so shelves. After going through them one-by-one and re-stacking as I went, they all ended up fitting on that one shelf... stacked three or four cups high and about 7 deep. That's more fish than they're going to be able to sell before living in those cups causes problems for the left-overs. To make matters worse, I found not one, but TWO cups with two fish in each!! They were all torn up, and the water was clearly stained with what I can only assume was blood... An employee was on hand, miraculously, helping another customer with some feeder goldfish. I asked if they had any extra betta cups, but he didn't know. He explained that he usually worked in the garden center and didn't know where the fish supplies were. I said that I had asked because they'd die if left together, but he seemed uninterested. I looked through their supply cabnet for extra cups, but found nothing... so I waited until the employee left, then dumped two of the bettas out into some of the bigger tanks... one with some dyed tetras, and one with some cories. Only one looked like he might make it :(. I also gave the bettas left in the cups some fresh, bloodless water. It was just terrible. Next time anything like this happens, I'm going to bite the bullet and speak to the manager. I hadn't done it before because I know he/she is probably busy and could care less about the fish, but I've had enough.

Edit: Oh, and the employee had absolutely no idea how to net fish, which was somewhat humorous. He spent at least 20 minutes trying to scoop out 10 feeder goldfish in a tank that was so overcrowded it was almost a solid mass of fish.
