Hi all been reading these forums for a few weeks now trying to get as much info as possible before I start my Nano
I have a 16uk gallon tank with built in filter system across the back (this takes approx 3.5g of the water and will make an ideal filter system for my Live rock rubble carbon heater etc.
If been doing a little pricing and wondered if anyone could give me any advise on this..
http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue...ometers-etc.asp Red Sea Max Starter Kit
Is it a good buy or are there things in there I'm not going to really need. Theres a little too much substrate but thats no problem can allways keep or sell on what I dont need.
I'm planning a reef system eventualy so the salt I think is the perfect type and enough there for 3 full water changes so will keep me going until I get the thing Cycled.
Just wondered what your opinions where. They also do a 50g RO unit there for £75 squid and this seems pretty on the button anyone know anywhere cheaper.
Any advise for first set up and what I need much appreciated.
Already have..
Tank 16 gallon with 50/50 light thought its only 26w T5 will this be enough?
Heater 100w
Powerhead variable flow upto 40 gallon size so ample for that tank
Tank has inbuilt filter system for rock rubble carbon etc. Will modify the outflow so its directional and comes out under water so no bubbles.
5kg of reef bones.. will buy 5kg of live rock once everything set up and settled for a few days.
Cant think of anything else.. lol

Try looking here Osmotics for a ro unit, they are one of our sponsors here at TFF, i believe you get 10 percent dicount, but not sure on that one, lol

I also noticed they have a hydrometer thee for just over 25 quid. Good price too

While convenient, IMO that kit has a bunch of things you don't need, and thus expensive just using the things you will use. What you need from that kit is:

Salt
Sand
Hydrometer (although I'd reccomend a refractometer if you want to keep a nano reef longterm)
Master test kit
Calcium test kit
Thermometer

You don't need the suppliments, you can make your own cheaper :). You'll only need 10lbs of sand, not 20, a basic API master test kit is cheap, and you save more if you buy salt in-bulk (5gal buckets). Overall the kit is convenient, but not necessarily economical IMO

Thanks guys. thats a big help, did think there were a few things in there I wouldnt need, just wanted to make sure from the people in the know :)
Also thanks for the RO unit info, they are laods cheaper there. Anyone tried to £45 economy RO unit? or is that just pushing it too far?

Thanks

Your welcome too the info, glad it was of some help to you. Let us know how you get on, i have been thinking about setting up a nano saltwater tank for a while now.

What tank have you got? Sounds like one from the aqua one range.

Cheers Gordon

Agree with Ski...also...ditch the plastic hydrometer and invest in a refractometer. SH
