"Oh! I was hoping for some nice tasty neons! "
Sorry, some angelfish got on my computer just then.
No, what would be nice would be some good sized schools of tetras or pencilfish. Beckford's Golden Pencilfish are wonderful fish (I've only got one left, sadly, but he's an old soldier) and a little bit "different".
Tetras or rasboras would be great. Try rummy-nosed tetras, head-and-taillights or harlequin rasboras. Someone posted a very pretty picture of a white widow tetra (a pink colour morph of the black widow tetra).
You've just got to have some loaches - yoyo loaches are wonderful. Clown loaches might be a little too big (they can grow to 12") and you need a few at least, but yoyos are smaller. Chain loaches are smaller still but are very difficult to get hold of.
Another difficult to get hold of fish that is wonderful is the Siamese Algae Eater. It can hold its own with more aggressive fish, but isn't actually aggressive itself. Plus it eats algae - even hair algae! You could get a small school in a 55 gallon. You probably couldn't have SAEs and yoyos, but there's some ideas.
