I always wondered how fish got pregnant. I mean I know the male has a gondulum but I wasn't sure how the female fish actually got pregnant because I've never seen them mate or the male even get close enough to the females you know what to do anything )
Well I can now say I've seen my balloon mollies mate. It was the coolest/weirdest thing I've seen. Not going to go to much into details as this if a family forum...but I have to admit it was pretty neat to see )
So how do they do it then? My mollies breed like rats, every week she's dropping off more kiddies, but I've never seen how they do it. I do manage to see the males chasing her, but never doing the act, and I'm curious, since they're livebearers.....
The males gonopodium turns around so it is ointing forward instead of back...he then swims VERY close to the female......gonopdium gets inserted and "Apparently" has anchors so it doesn't come out till he has released the sperm.....
Thats what I read anyways.....I have never actually seen it......THOUGH I have seen the males gono changing direction
He got really close to her and kinda turned on his side a bit and poked his gonopodium ( I wrote gondulum before..I was WAY off oops ) )straight inside her )
It was so weird to watch. It's so fast ....no enjoyment I watched him do it about 8 times in the course of a minute. Funny thing is the girl he was most interested in is so Heavily pregnant. Poor thing
I know when my EYs have spawned since there is lots of noise coming from the tank and I can see the tank bottom (thats how deep they dig)...not to mention the rocks everywhere
so that's what they're doing, it almost looked as though he was just bullying her....but now I know. Although it is so quick, I doubt I'd even get to see any of the "gondo" movement etc.
Thanks for the tip though
Well a lot of the time the male is nipping/sniffing at the females behind and there is no gondo action to be seen Thats always what I saw mine do thats why I always wondered how they got pregnant. But now I've seen how it happens )
