I aquired a 2nd hand tank complete with a couple of fish, looked one up and thinks it def a young orange pike cichlid. Gona rehome it as it grows too large for my plans.
But a week ago i placed it in with my polleni who is usually a gentle giant and lives happily with fish smaller than the pike. Sat on my computer today and heard a big splash and saw just the head of the pike hanging out of the polleni's mouth, i banged on the glass and he luckily spat him out, so i have him recovering in my hospital tank. The pike is swimming around ok, is a little bruised in the middle but not very bad, Thank heavens i was in the room at the same time, i'd have been searching for it for days.
If anyone with a big tank and compatible fish wants an orange pike i will have one available shortly when i know he's 100%.

If you fancy bringing it over here and having a tour of the zoo we call home then i'd be happy to house it in my front room display tank, i don't drive and i've used up my quota of fish collection journeys until i've done some more DIY so i can't get over to you.

Handy to know someone will want him if he's ok, i always worry if i aquire unusual fish wether i will find a good home for them.
Don't know how long the guy had him but he's only about 3-4" long and still has the young yellow/orange colouring
He's looking pretty lively considering his ordeal.
I am in process of having a 6ft CA cichlid tank with my veija and texas, just looking into other tankmates at moment but feel this fish might be too aggressive or may possably eat them when he grows,so don't think i can keep him.
I have no experience with pike cichlids but just had a little google on them and it seems to confirm the aggression thought and that they grow up to about 12-14".

Orange pikes are quite mellow and are more likely to be bullied by large aggressive central american cichlids than be the bullies themselves, there is absolutely no way a pike cichlid would swallow a veija or texas, their body shape is far to high for a slim profiled fish like a pike to get their mouth around.

nice one angel, super angel to the rescue, hope the pols ok?
as boss said they would prob stand up well in that tank, as there quite mild,,, :good:

yep the pols ok, probably gutted i spooked him into spitting it out, he missed a good meal there lol.
maybe i,ll try him with the texas and veija when he,s recovered if he,s not that aggressive, but i would just hate to go to bed when he,s bigger and wake up to a scene of carnage with bodyparts of my favorite cichlids screwn around the tank lol
i,ll try and get a photo later
regards Angel

could you please confirm my identification, they are abit dark it is abit more lighter orange/yellow than the photo's show, thinking its an orange pike due to colour but not 100% sure
