The 'post time' clock thing is about 7 minutes fast...

We regularly get funny time stamps on here - many a time I have posted something, then someone replies and it appears from the time stamp they replied before i wrote the orignal post :hyper:

The board clock is out, always has been and whenever it's reset it is out within a few days anyway.

The BST time change has nothing to do with the board clock, you have to configure those settings yourself in your user CP.

Part of the issue with DST is where you live. In the US, DST started 2 weeks ago on March 14. I'm sure in other parts of the world, it may have not started yet. If it has started where you live and hasn't updated properly, follow the instructions below to correct it.

These are based on using the Classic Blue skin.
  1. Click My Settings at the top of the page
  2. Under Time Zone, select your time zone from the drop down box. All times are based on GMT +/-.
  3. Make sure the Auto correct DST box is checked if your area observes daylight savings time.
  4. Click Save Changes at the bottom.
If it still shows incorrectly try unchecking the DST box, click Save Changes and then recheck the box and then save again.

As to the time, as Truck mentioned, it has been this way for a while. Every time it's reset, it goes right back off again.

To keep the board time accurate, you need to set the system clock of the web server against a time server daily using NTP...they are numerous free time servers available for sync'ing against...my 2 pence :)

Thanks for the heads up on the DST variations, makes sense now :)

I wish we could just get rid of DST, I think it was invented to give farm labourers more daylight to work in, which is irrelevant these days with electricity and motorised vehicles...

Actually, in the U.S. Benjamin Franklin was one of the big proponents of DST. His intention was to save on candle wax. In general, the farmers are against it. If the farmer also keeps animals that are supposed to meet some sort of schedule, the time change really throws them off. For example, I've read that it takes around a week before dairy cows resume producing as much milk as they do before they are milked an hour earlier each day.

That said, in the modern era, it does save about 1% energy use here in the U.S. 1% doesn't sound like much, but when you consider all the energy the U.S. uses, 1% is a lot. There are also at least 2 industries in the U.S. that are big, big supporters: golf and bar-be-que. Golf obviously because more people will be inclined to play more golf because of more light after work. And, more people would be inclined to grill out if there is more light after work.

What I think that ought to happen is have DST all year around. I already drive to work in the dark most days anyway; a lot of days in the winter it is dark when I leave work, too. It would be nice to have some extra daylight to drive home in in the winter.

Good point on energy use, it makes sense in that respect alone...

Interesting history :)

Can this be done? It is very annoying when the time is out by as much as 10 minutes...

We all have clocks don't we? There is one on the task bar.

Yeah and it is not the same as the forums or other peoples...

Using a time server is easy, all servers can support it without much effort, and it would get rid of this annoying difference that I do not see on other forums (albeit not fish ones)

I'd be happy to give advice on what to do if someone would tell me what the server OS is etc, I am a software developer and do this for a living.

Maybe I am more picky than most when it comes to things like this but I don't see the problem elsewhere

The actually tried this in North Carolina (may have been nationwide) back in the late 70s to mid 80s I believe. There was a school child that got hit by a car resulting in the child's death. They attributed it to the fact that it was dark at 8 AM and the driver didn't see the child dressed in darkish clothes. They almost immediately went back to regular time and never tried it again.

Considering that the school kids end up catching buses at 6:30 anyway, it's still dark, regardless of whether DST is in effect or not. It would be worth a try again to see how it works.

Having said that though, there are still parts of the US that don't observe DST. Arizona and Hawaii still don't and from what I've heard a few states are trying to abolish it.
