Thank you MrBones for the warm welcome!

i just lost bost my new Cylone puffres :-( i set up my aquarium just 4 days ago and last night, they died. looks like they were killed!

when i saw them at an aquarium and enquired, i was told that they could be kept with cichlids, so i bought them too.

there's a pair of red parrots, one pair of oscars, a pair of ornatus, a pair of brichardi albino, 4 small tiger barbs, 2 white morphs (my prime suspects), blue morphs and a sucker cat fish (the one that's always sucking on da glass).

who do u think killed my dear little new puffer friends?

also, im very keen on maintaining an aquarium with the puffers in them, so do advice what i should keep and which fish i should lose for them to settle in.

Amongst my favourites are the Parrot fish, the tiger barbs (love how they swim around in a group) and ofcourse the lovely, but late Puffer fish. :(

thanx in advance.

How big is your tank?
Puffer fish are unpredictable, and should almost always, if possible, be kept in a species tank. I've heard that puffers are not compatible with cichlids (or general fish in that matter), so in the future I would strongly recommend you do not buy any more.
Did you happen to catch the scientific or another common name for your puffer? I've never heard of a cyclone puffer, and I couldn't find any info either.

Always take what your fish store tells you with a pinch of salt.. remember that most of them are just there to make a sale.

There is no substitute for your own research.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm guessing he means Ceylon puffers??
that's what i mean alright! they are Ceylon Puffers. sorry for the typo there!

My tank holds approx 70 gallons.

so if i have to have a puffer, i keep it all alone in a tank? what's there has to be some one it gets along with!?

i really wanna get myself another puffer and i'l do what it takes to give it best care.

how big a tank is ample for 2 puffers? and how does one tell their gender?

thanx again

I believe the ceylon is the tetraodon fluvialitis/nigroviridis. It is a brackish puffer which grows to approx 14cm. It is considered a relatively peaceful puffer, but as with all puffers care should be taken when choosing tankmates.

I would suggest keeping them with larger, peaceful fish. I wouldn't recommend cichlids, sorry.

I've never kept one, so perhaps someone who has will be able to offer more info.

You could also have a look on google - there is quite a bit of info out there.

Oh, I also meant to ask - when you say you set up the tank 4 days ago, do you mean it finished cycling 4 days ago or you set it up from scratch?

Wrong, those names are suitiable for the Green Spotted Puffer. If you want puffers, I'd suggest having a fully cycled tank before you put them in, most puffers are very sensitive to rapid parameter changes.

I was wondering about that -_-

I have just browsed several completely unrelated sites which all refer to the ceylon as I have stated. Not intending to contradict your understanding, but I know there is a lot of confusion regarding various "green" puffers.

Godrick Try and be a bit more polite.

Taxonomicaly the ceylon puffer is a bit of a mystery No one seems to know the nomenclature Althought it is often regarded as a GSP with coloration more like that of a Fig 8 and a softer temperment. They do best in light brackish but you can experiment to find just how much yours likes.

These Puffers are excelent at handleing rapid changes in conditions being brackish fish they can acclimate as fast as th marine salts can desolve assumeing you dont make huge jumps in salinity. something that they cannot handle is Amonia and 4 days is just about how long it would take for them to die of new tank syndrome . cichilids are not brackish fish and as such the puffers should be kept with fish of a similar temperment. I'm guessing that the other fish you have are also suffering because cichilids are very oportunistic fish and if they eat the puffers they die but they wouldnt know this.

If these are new world cichilids you can keep them with a south american puffer but puffers are best kept in species tanks. If you get a 1o gallon you can get a pair of Dwarfs and breed them or you can get a 20 long and keep a few fig *'s or a ceylon or 2 but your current tank is not the place for puffers from the look of it.

Remember to Cycle for atlest 6 weeks with fish before adding puffers or however long it takes fishless.

thanx all for your tremendous response. It's been very helpful and also very easing to know that i have the people on this board to seek information and help from regarding all my fish.

The Ceylon Puffer's are apparently the only ones we get in the city i live in (Hyderabad, India). they have pretty much gotton under my skin nad im quite bent on getting a new pair home again. This time, i shall advance with more caution! thanx again!

so no cichlid's for the new ones.

i dont exactly know what 'cycling the tank' means. i figures it meant just leaving the water in with the setup for 3 days sans the fish. i suppose i was mistaken yet again. could u fill me in on this issue as well please.

Can anyone also tell me which fish are best kept as tank mates with my preospective puffers? i dont want them to be bored all alone.

thanx in advance.

cycleing takes a month with hardy fish in the tank. It refers to allowing the bacteria that put nitrogen throught the various stops in the nitrogen cycle building up. fish produce amonia and that is highly toxic to puffers. after about 15 days a bacterial colony will form that will make this amonia into nitrite which is also highly toxic to puffers. After 15 days a colony builds up to convert nirtite into nitrate which your puffers can handle okay.

Read the artical in the beginers section.
