Further to my post earlier in the week, I am a new fish owner and was loosing all my fish, happily I have had no deaths since so was looking good. I have got up this morning to find baby fish happily swimming around my tank on the day I was about to get some more for the tank. Can I still put more in ? Wanted some shrimp?? And maybe some guppys . Do I need to separate the babies into their own tank

What fish are they?
what other fish are in the tank?
water parameters?
hiding places?
size of tank?
how many fish?

All this depends on whether you can add more fish or if you need to move the babies, even in some species the parents will often eat their own babies.

Ok as tank is new I followed advice from fish shops(big mistake) so have had a few fish in there, guppy, algae eater, glass catfish and a gold coloured fishe that I don't know the name off but looks like a gold fish( but isn't lol). All readings look good but am popping out now to get pet shop to test for me, tank is 25l, I have a fresh plant in there and a cave
Am counting 6 babies all just under 1cm

Don't buy any more fish, 25l is very small & you already have some unsuitable fish in it.
Glass catfish need to be kept in groups & need a much bigger tank.
Can you get pcs of the algae eater & gold coloured one so we can id it for you?

Will try but had problems getting pics on before :-( also I listed the fish I have had over the whole time, sadly all that's left now is the algea eater, 1 guppy and the one gold one hence the restock lol

Yeah id say you should only keep a trio of guppy in a tank that size really...
the gold fish you dont know, can we get pics?
if its more yellow it could be a ram/gourami or even a malawi

all 3 are not suited to this tank or its mates really...

Pics of the algae eater would help too, OP; it's also likely to grow very big and not be suitable for your tank:/

I know it's sounds harsh, but I would 'forget' about the fry for the moment. See if you can get the shop to take back everything except the guppies.

Oh, forgot to say, if you can, get the shop to write the numbers from the tests down for you.

Ok just got back all tests were within parameters other than ammonia has gone up is now 1ppm have done 20% water change but still struggling with pictures

This is the algae eater they recommended
This is a pic of them both, not the best I know lol

Oh no... Yup. That is a pleco... I would look into rehoming him as soon as possible or buy a huge tank...

Yes, that is a plec of some sort, although I can't tell exactly which species. It's not one that's suitable for your tank anyway, I'm sorry to say.

Ammonia at 1ppm is very dangerous to your fish, so you'll need to do a much bigger water change to get it down. Drain the tank right down, leaving just enough water for the fish to swim upright (don't forget to switch your heater and filter off first!) before refilling with temperature matched, dechlorinated water.

Then do 50 or 60% every day until you can afford some test kits of your own.

If your ammonia is reading 1ppm you need to do a larger than 20% water change, that ammonia needs to be as close to zero as you can get as any ammonia is harmful to your fish.
Do at least anther 50% change, have you got your own test kit? Much better to have your own rather than trusting the Lfs
+1 on rehoming everything but the guppies

:-( ok I only did a 20% on advice of lps they said 20% today, 10% in 2 days the same 2 days after that, is this not enough?? As for the algae eater I will try to find a new home for him, first lps I went to recommended him for my tank saying he would only grow as big as the size of the tank. Is so hard to start a new tank when the advise you get is floored or money orientated, so pleased I found this site when I did, the temptation to quit is huge but I would love a nice tank :-(
Is the platty ok to stay?

Don't quit we're here to help.
You're not the first to be given wrong advice from Lfs we've all been there when starting out

Don't panic!

We see people in the same situation as you all the time, and many of our most valued members came here in the same state, once upon a time!

The shop is wrong when they say to do small water changes; I don't know why they insist on saying it

Do large ones, as we've said. As long as the new water is warmed and dechlorinated, it won't harm your fish to do big changes.

Whereabouts in the UK are you? We might have someone who can help you out with some mature media or a home for your plec. You could look out for a bigger tank, perhaps second hand if money's tight; a 100l would see your plec sorted for the next couple of months while you decide what to do?
