hi all
I just come home and someone I don't know has knocked on the door.
in his hand was a bucket with this goby in it.
he said his neighbour (who I do know, sort of) said that I'm someone who could take
this fish from him and be able to look after it properly, (nice thought but I'm no expert on gobies),
as it keeps eating his wife's guppies.

so what is it?

he is around 4 inches T/L if that helps at all

My guess is a juvenile Dormitator Maculatus, but there are plenty of gobies that look similar to that. It's tricky.

Looks like he needs a feed though.

Well its some sort of sleaper goby (Eleotridae) so that narrows it down to a few thousand species  I dont think it is any of the Dorminator species as it lacks the blue spots behind the gills and the second dorsal fin is too short and it clearly isnt a Mogurnda, Butis or Oxyeleotris species so that rules all those out too so thats all the common types off the list.

Id be tempted to go with Gobiomorphus australis from comparing with the photo in the Baensch atlas 2.

I don't think it is Dormitator Maculatus as looking at the pictures the fins look differnt

It was the fins that i was going by. The white tip on the anal fin is something my d. maculatus has.

Be glad you don't have oxleotris wolf!

managed to get these just now

Ok i take it back, Fella was 100% spot on it is a Dorminator maculatus.

oh heck!
want him CFC?

I could chuck it in the brackish tank if you wanted to drop him around at some point.

It looks awesome. i've got one and it's a great fish. Watch it go mad for prawns!
