I think you might find you've hit on a touchy subject. Yes they are hybrids and I think that you will find most people here wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. They are bred sometimes with out tails and personally I think playing about with nature, to produce a fish when there are so many natural beautiful fish around is very morally questionable.

Then again some people love them and that is up to them. But as you can see if you fancy looking up some of the old posts about them, it makes a lot of fish keepers very angry to see a mutation of the fish they love.

just to expand on what alex said a bit. the parrot fish is a hybrid. the blood parrot is a dyed hybrid. Many people are not to keen on them as many of us frown on man interfering with natural selection and all, but opinions are like *delete explative* so if it is your fancy go for it. just expect many board members to give big harumphs if you post about it.

Hi,

How i cant tell you not to buy it and i wouldnt.

You would still go ahead and buy one knowing its background?

well the 1 i saw looked in good health and it was only young.......after looking at a site blood parrot site ....i couldnt find anything wrong with them......according to this site there are tail-less ones but they are bred that way...and are called love heart parrots......and from what ive read the one that ive seen isnt died.....but i may be wrong

im not trying to cause an argument here........i just wanted to know if they had been mis-treated in anyway....and anno that dying fish is horendous......so id never buy 1

heres a lil snippet from the site ive been reading today...........

The second most popular type seems to be the Purple Blood Parrot, like the latter, it's name is also deceiving. This fish is a bright red color with some parts of the coloration so deep and brilliant it appears to be a purple, hence the name Purple Parrot. There is some controversy as to whether or not these fish are "dyed". To my knowledge these fish are NOT dyed but are just a different color morph.

and i may sound really thick here but.......when they say man made....do they mean man interfered...or....is it that the 2 parents of the first original blood parrot just bred?

Tek :fish:

and when i say pink i dont mean bright pink.....like a dark pink to red colour

feel like every1 hates me now :-(

Whether to buy it or not would have to be a personal choice. Some people don't like them because they are Hybreds which in all likelyhood could not have occured in nature, they are also unpopular because of the Dye injected into them by man. I think the biggest reason not to buy them (IMO) is because if no-one buys them there will be no demand for them and the mad scientists that are pumping them out of the labs will stop creating them because there will be no market to sell them. Although I think some of them are cute and could live a (relatively) healthy life if they were "rescued" , they would be replaced by others that would also need to be rescued. It may sound cruel, but if no-one bought them they would probably die in the lfs and they wouldn't order any more.

well is there a way that i can find out that they are dyed or not????

if i contacted the supplier would they be able to tell me?

would they tell me at all????

This means that two totaly different fishs 'bit and bobs' were mixed together to make a new fish which would otherwise not exist.

You can tell if they are died if they have a bright coloring. Usually these fish start out a greyish brown color and turn a light red as adults. These of course are the ones that are not died. If it is a blood red, purple, green, blue, etc you can be almost guaranteed its dyed.

Okay, okay....here we go

I'll take the pressure off of you and turn it to me.....I LOVE CONFLICT :p

I am a blood parrot lover. Please go through my posts and read up on them. They are a fabulous, loving fish that deserves a home. People who think that if the public stops buying them that this will stop their existance is...well, very IGNORANT!! They spawn on their own and there are many different types. All the way from those little dyed ones in the pet store to other beautiful...flaw free fish that do mate on their own and do so very successfully and happily. If you can get one of those ones I would say DO IT SISTER!!!! If the one in your local store is extremely bright then I would really think it has been dyed. Actually most all of the Blood Parrots that come in to the LFS are dyed. If it is a little larger than the others and it is orange then I would say no it isn't, but it may have been at one time seeing as how the dye fades with age, but the ones that are dyed usually don't get their full potential size which is sad. I have a blood parrot and I love him to pieces (read my other posts) but I will never buy a dyed fish again. I put up a little article on hybrid and dyed fish...please read it!! There are many other dyed fish as well. They do not inject blood parrots so don't believe that when you hear it, but they do dip'n'dye which is just as horrible. It may not be traumatic at the time, but it takes their slimecoat off therefore leaving their scales succeptible to the dying tank which is literally a tank full of dyed water whether it be green, purple, red, blue, yellow, orange or what have you. I would recommend not buying the dyed parrots. It shortens their lives drastically because their bodies are constantly trying to rid it's system of the dye and therefore shortens their lives.

But despite what the majority here will tell you......My two sense is this:
I would not buy that particular one, but if you do like the Blood Parrot, then check around your LFSs and the internet and see if you can buy one that is certified NO DYE!!! And give him a happy home, because he or she deserves it  :D :D
