Well, last night at work I got to "help" scrub out the fish tanks. I put help in quotation marks because the other guy that was suppose to be helping always seemed to disappear. Anyway...when he was around I thought I would give him a little quiz, asking him various questions.

-Asked him if he asks someone how big their tank was before he sold them a fish. He said the main question he asks is how long their tank has been set up. Hmmm...ok, pretty good. But still, why not ask how big their tank is?

-Asked him what he recommends to people if they ask about ich. He said he first asks them what they did to the fish!? Then he gives them a good med. However he doesn't tell them to raise the temp. He also believes that a lot of the med directions are wrong, but he doesn't tell the people that. Hmmmm...

-He believes the only way to get rid of algae is lots and lots of water changes. It doesn't really matter to him how many times a week you do this since it is the only way to combat algae. Hmmm...I thought multiple water changes a week was a bad thing!

-He actually sold a goldfish to a lady with a tropical tank and told her that as long as she kept the temp at 75 that all the fish would be happy. Hmmm...btw, I talked this lady out of getting a pleco because she couldn't remember what size tank she had. Talked her into getting more then 1 glow light because they like to school, and sold her a blue gourami. She had a little girl with her, so I figured it was only like a 10 gal tank.

-Then he tried to tell me that dwarf puffers couldn't be strictly freshwater. They still needed some sort of salt in the water. I told him the place I got the fish (Petsmart) told me that they were strictly freshwater, and that many places on the net told me that they are freshwater. He went over to their little cupboard and got out his fish atlas to look them up so he could prove me wrong. He only found one puffer type in that book, and it didn't say anything about the puff being brackish.

I told him that I would be more then happy to look up some info for him and bring it in. He also told me not to believe a word that the pet store tells you! So wouldn't that kinds be contradicting himself??

I had bought a ADF the other day to put in my community tank and it died. I took it back yesterday and the dumby asked me if I put it in with my puffers. I looked at hime and said "Why would I have done that?? I'm not stupid ya know!!"

Then he also told me that he hates it when he goes to a different store to look at the fish and the workers there are telling people the wrong information. He normally corrects that worker, but why can't he give the same good information at our store? He said when he came in the fish were in such bad shape, and he is right on that one, and he was always getting blamed even though he wasn't the one doing the fish orders. He told out boss, who thinks we need lots and lots of fish in the tanks to look more appealing to everyone, that until he gets to order the fish he shouldn't be blamed for anything. I agree with that 100%.

So now he orders the fish, and only gets in what he thinks would sell. The bad thing is that he doesn't cater to what other people might want. He gets the same fish that you can find anywhere else. What he needs is to get some "oddballs" in. I think that if the store would try puffs, they would find that people want them!

I just thought this was kind of interesting. He claims to be so good with fish, like he is a fish god or whatever...truth be told any idiot could do what he does all day which is stand around. (Sorry this is so long...) There were other questions I asked him as well but can't remember them. Anyway, just thought I would share. :dunno:

Wow you are a good person to put up with that kind of person. He doesn't sound horrible, just hard to work with. :S

Sounds like you work with a stereotypical pet store employee, always thinking he knows more than anyone else. I went into one pet store to buy a gold gourami. The employee tried to tell me that they grew to be over a foot long.

Hmmm...I thought multiple water changes a week was a bad thing!

When did water changes become a bad thing? Some people have flow through systems where their water is constantly changed!

Small daily water changes are great for your fish and is a large part of conditioning most egg laying fish for breeding, washing filter media daily would be harmful but doing water changes doesnt hurt at all.

Hi freshwatergal :)

It seems to me that you are starting to like that job. It's probably just a matter of time until YOU are running the fish department. That would be a great thing for the fish!
