just a few betta questions

ive just got a few questions...

1. How often do they need to be fed...all the food i have says 2-3 times a week so i was just asking to make sure and what types of food do they like best? so i can mix it around alittle

2. how often should there tnak be cleaned(i have a one gallon)

3. can i use a light for my tank? its somewhat dark where i have it. it the only spot i could put him where i can see him slearly and where my cats cant keep swatting at the tank easily. i have a little light that clips onto a book so you can read in the dark, could that be clipped on to the tank and can i use that?

4. this isnt really for betta care but ive seen so many pictures of female bettas and i want one! i have a petco and a petsmart near me and when i go they only have signs saying male bettas. do you have to ask for them? or find certain stores?


any info is welcomed i want to make sure my betta is as happy as he can be

hello there billy to inform you a little about your questions there are some very informative sites out there on bettas such as:

I not too long ago got my first betta but have constantly researching them and learning more everyday, so I think I am somewhat noligable to answer a few of your questions.

Even though on most betta food containers they say to feed 2-3 times a week, it actually all depends on your betta, but do not overfeed because they can get swim bladder. I suggest starting out once or twice a day and see how he responds, also mix up his food a little by adding some blood worms, brine shrimp, and maybe even sometimes a cooked cut-up pea (they like those

I have 2 one gal tanks, and I do complete water changes every 3 or 4 days, partial every 2 days.

Also using a light would be okay too, just dont keep it on too much, a few hours a day is good.

About female bettas..I have looked many places to find them and found living in new england it isnt very easy. You can order them from certain fish stores, and I found petco orders around 5 a week, but I dont suggest buying bettas from them, they are usually sickly (I shortly found out after getting mine from there)

thanks...those sites you sent are very helpful. my peta is from petco like yours i wasnt planning on getting him from there but i went to petsmart and theyonly had one left that wasnt too appealing to me and petco had a bunch and he looked healthy through the little cup but i will be sure to keep an eye on him for infections
