Jumping Bettas

Could I get by with keeping the water level a couple of inchs lower and not covering the top of my tank? How high can they jump?

Yes, definitely cover it. Some of mine are trying to obtain Olympic records for jumping when I turn my back during water changes. One of my Plakats jumps a good two inches out of the water for food...and I know he can jump higher.

I would dare to guess that my little Lucky (although he didn't have a tail to weigh himself down) sailed up and over the side of his little aquaview container at LEAST 4 inches (that was straight up in the air). He wound up in the sink, went down the drain, I had to rip the pipes off to rescue him, yadda yadda.... he's fine now though.

But they can jump.
