hi all, just recently the lighting in my tank has started to play up. The lights switch on fine but after a couple of minutes cuts out. I have checked the wiring in the plug, by passed the switch and removed the light tubes to check the contacts - all this looks ok. When lights are on i notice the one tube is quite pink in colour, would you say this tube is on its way out and is causing the problem? i hear that the jewel light units do play up a bit so its probably more complicated than that. Are there starters anywhere in the unit that would be easy to get to and replace?

Thanks for any help, John.

hi john,

how long have these tubes been fitted in your tank?? it is generally recommended that they be changed once a year.

Id guess that the ballast is going, check out this thread -

Hi,

Mine on my Rio 180 did exactly the same thing. My first instict was that it was a starter or something, and I started to panic.

I took out the bulbs and had a good look - it turned out that one of the bulbs had a burn mark on one end, inside the tube? I replaced that bulb and hey presto, all is well!

I would suggest changing the bulbs first, as they are comparitively cheap compared to the light fitting

:)
