hi all,can anyone recomend the best way to remove the rio 180 filter, compared to there web site it is held to the glass with aqaurium sillicon, now i dont want to damage my tank by trying to force it away from the glass, and using chemicals or simmilar to unbond it is a no no ,as my tank has water and fish in,so if anyone knows a way, then it would be much appreciated

Just out of intesest how did you get on with this.

Furthermore, what was your reason for removing, as I have a rio125 and still using the stock filter.

not got round to doing it yet im afraid,i think it will be difficult tho, because of the position of the sillicon

use a large snap off type stanley knife (disposable ones like the carpet fitters use) extend it all th way out that should give you 6-8" of blade

ie........... (but the bigger version)

if not "borrow" the bread/carving knife from the kitchen

I know this has been done by many people, but I am also sharing the thought with mister-t

My filter had been in years so was starting to come loose already, I just gave it a little tug and it came out.

fearce - People generally use them to replace them with better external filters as the Juwel ones are not that great. It also free's up a fair bit of space in the tank and make it look a lot cleaner.

As has been said, a very sharp knife or even modeling scalpel. Just be careful not to scratch the glass (would need to press quite hard for this though).

Gently slice down each side of the filter and break the silicone seal. I beleive they also have some small round areas of sealant too, so might need to use a bit of force to get it off.

I took the Juwel filter out the 2nd day i had the tank prior to adding gravel, water anything :)

ok, imi thinking i have to do this. the filter seems to have stopped working. tried going down to see if there was a problem inside, but couldnt get anything going. So.... how do i mature media for the new external filter? just use the same stuff? have you got around to this mister t?

i just used a sharp pointed chopping knife, pull the filter back and stick the knife into the adhesive , its more like putty so it doesn't take much to cut through it, i reckon it took no more that 3 mins to get the one out of my vision 180
