Hello all,

I have recently purchased a Jewel rekord tank for my computer room, and the filter is really noisey, constantly loud running water (which can be very distracting when tring to do assignments but have to keep making visits to the toilet!!! )

Does anyone else have this problem? have i done something wrong? i have filled to the exact level that it states and followed all other instructions! so am at a loss!!! I have a tetra aquaart down stairs and you can hardly even hear that one!!!

Any help would be greatfully recieved!

Many thanks
Clare

From your post it sounds like you've done something wrong with the installation. The juwel filters, while not beeing that great (I have the jumbo on my Rio 400) are quite OK for most purposes. They are also practically silent when set up correctly.
If yours is the same as mine the water level should be just below thetop of the slots at the top of the filter house, maybe 5mm of slot left above the water level. The output of the filter (tube sticking out of the side from which the water flows) should be fully submerged and pointing across the tank (or slightly up or down depending on how you have the nozzles set up).
It sounds like the water level isn't high enough or the outlet is pointing at the surface. There should be no 'running water' sounds. I sometimes get a rattle where the lid of the filter house vibrates if the outlet pipe is touching the main body. I just wiggle the pump/outlet until there is a clear gap between the housing and the outlet.
A photo would help diagnosis if possible.

in my experience the noise tends to come from air in the impeller and out pipe. If its new the impeller should be fine. I used to get small air locks in the 45 degree angled outflow pipe. Whilst it was running I just rotated it around and the air came out.

What you can do (preferably if there is no fish in) is take your pump out of where it normally sits and dangle it in the tank. Start it up and give it a good jiggle to get rid of all the air pockets. Quickly turn off put into normal position and turn it on. Whilst running you can add the 45 degree pipe after emersing it in water and ensuring no air is in it.

It takes about 10 minutes for all the noise to disappear once you start it. More noise is generated by the outfow hitting the surface. I aimed the pipe at the glass at the back of the tank at an angle just above horizontal to give a little surface agitation.

Ultimately I just added an external filter to my rekord 60 and removed the internal. Mine is in my study and I cannot hear my little eheim 2211 AT ALL. I have to put my hand on the pump to feel the vibrations to make sure its still running (or I could look at the spray bar)!!! It looks so much bigger without the internal filter.

Here is a small picture before I changed everything :) It was taken by my mobile phone so it wont be great!

edit: I forgot to add - use bluetak to keep the filter lid down. It take a little investigation to track down mechanical vibrations compared to air lock noise.
