Ok I have a Jewel-internal filter.

A white pre-filter pad at the top, carbon pad under that and then four sponges under that.

I have been told too do my water changes weekly and that the filter should be striped down at least every two months and cleaned other wise the good bacteria will start too brake down? :/

I replace the top pre-filter every week when I do the water change, I have been told not to bother with the carbon sponge but can anyone help me with what too do about cleaning the rest of the filter.

I would also like to ask…I think my tank is cycling because the Nitrite and Ammonia levels are always at zero, I have been told that by doing the water change every week I won’t have any problems with Nitrate. Should I be checking anything else?

What I do with these filters is:

change the white filter floss pads once a week (though you can probably get away with rinsing it in old tank water one week and changing it the next)

gently rinse one of the filter sponges every week in the old tank water bucket after water change. This way every sponge gets a rinse once a month which is quite enough

if you keep the black carbon filter you will need to change that every three months or so; but you can also swap that for another blue sponge

the other sponges need only be changed when they disintegrate (hasn't happened yet to me in 18 months)

Just a small note but the white pad is best rinsed under a running tap to clean it rather than replace it. This pad contains no or very little bacteria as it is there just for mechanical filtration so using tapwater will not cause any harm.

ALL THE OTHER SPONGES (with the exception of the carbon which should be thrown away after a few weeks) NEED TO BE RINSED IN TANKWATER.

:good:
Thanksguys

I have done a water change tonight and rinsed the top sponge in some of the water I took out so next week I will do the second.
