Ok I have a Jewel-internal filter.

A white pre-filter pad at the top, carbon pad under that and then four sponges under that.

I have been told too do my water changes weekly and that the filter should be striped down at least every two months and cleaned other wise the good bacteria will start too brake down?

I replace the top pre-filter every week when I do the water change, I have been told not to bother with the carbon sponge but can anyone help me with what too do about cleaning the rest of the filter. :/

:) I would also like to ask…I think my tank is cycling because the Nitrite and Ammonia levels are always at zero, I have been told that by doing the water change every week I won’t have any problems with Nitrate. Should I be checking anything else?

Hi i change the white pre filter pad at the top weekly with the water change like yourself. The carbon i change every 4 weeks and clean all the other sponges in water from the tank that i've put through a sieve so there isn't any bit's in it. I'm no expert but i've had crystal clear water from the start using this method so i can only assume i'm doing the right thing.. B)

i would only add that i would remove the carbon sponge and replace it with more bio sponge. though i have an external, my water is also very clear.

if you have the juwel filter with 4 sponges.... DO NOT clean the bottom two every two months - you will notice there's two holes for water to exit the filter chamber - one at the bottom and one just above the lower two sponges.

This is to ensure a slow flow rate through the bottom two sponges to maximise the biological effectiveness of the filter and allow it to breakdown nitrate.

if you clean these bottom two sponges often... this will not happen. Their primary function is NOT to trap dirt - most of which should have been removed by the fine pad at the top.

The idea behind having the fine pad is to use the sponges as bio medium... therefore i would advise you to clean the fine filter as and when needed - in reality this will be every couple of weeks unless you have a lot of fish. then clean the top two sponges in tank water every couple of months... and the bottom two a couple of times a year at the most.

Thank's for the info i shall try that from now on..
