i have purchased a jewel lately this cichlid is only 1" put has already started to kill my pl*cos one by one at first i thought that my tyretrack eel was doing the damage as my gold nugget was first he was 4" and was paralized so naturally i thought that the tyre was resonsable 4 this as he is 3 ft so i moved him 2 a new tank since then i bought a brisle nose pl*c and the same happened so the other night i was watching my tank and i noticed this jewel just consantly attacing my 7" royal pl*c i know cichlids can be territorial but this guy is taking the piss he is in a 8 ft tank with a south american rift lake theme and no matter where the pl*cs go he hunts them and terroisies then i thought that pl*cs could handle this sort of tank (cichlid) as before i had oscars and jagurars and they cuold not or did inflict the sort of damage this little brute can any suggestions would be appreciated

These guys can certainly be mean. You might not be able to keep a pleco in there with it. You could try trading it for another.

jewels are generally mean but every fish has a personality and yours has a mean one

HAHAHA! I'm not the only one. They are mean little *******. Mine killed 2 figure-8 puffers when they started to breed. I have really bad luck. When I got my first 2 they were male and female which meant :rip: for the 2 firemouths in there with them. I tried again a few months later with figure-8 puffers, and they were male and female, which meant :rip: for the other fish. Just recently I had a 1.5 inch one beating up my 4-5 inch gudgeon. Oy. Good luck. BTW, these are african cichlids that live in rivers, not new world. Pretty fish, with a price. If you can set up a 20 long for the jewel itself. It's worth it, when they have a nice territory to themselves, they turn bright red  Good luck again times a million for these mean@$$ fish

:D thanks 4 the suggestions ill but him in my QT for now with the tyretrack i just hope he is fast enough to stay out of his way untill i can find a sutiable tank what size would be recomended i have space only for a 4ft about 55 gal in the spare room where my QT tank is what cichlids would be ok with him ?????(i think ill send him to anger management classes) :D :D

You could put a salvini cichlid in there with him. A great fish that gets brilliant colors when breeding. Of course if this is a 55 gal i'd suggest just the jewel, salvini and some dithers. Both fish will take half the tank as their territory.

a salvini sounds fine i had one a few years ago that bred with a jack dempsey i had i have seen flowerhorns are they a mixture of these two as the offspring looked similar ????? oh great pic impur :kewlpics:

A flowerhorn is made of a trimac and midas usually i believe. They will get very big. They will also kill your jewel easily. These guys attack your hand when full grown. I have seen a 1" chunk out of a guys hand that the flowerhorn bit when he was cleaning the tank.

:D i know that flowerhorns can grow large i looked them up i aslo loked up on the jewel and these fish can hold there own in medium size cichlid tanks and sometimes as one qouted he placed a jevi jewel in a tank with a mangenese and an oscar both large this fish apparenly hid away from them but in the end he was swimming freeley in this tank with no bother cos he did not backdown but oviously this may not happen each time but cichlids do not have to be large to be dominant i think???
