Hi guys
I bought a baby parrot fish or rather, rescued it from a store around 2 months ago when it was just half an inch in diameter. It was in a tiny tank being bullied by other parrot fish and didn't look good. Now it is around 2 inches and very friendly but i don't know what tankmates would be suitable. It's in a 30g at the mo with just a small bristlenose. Could i move my madagascan rainbows in with it as they are in need of moving out from an increasingly aggressive african cich tank.
Thanks in advance

Blood Parrots
I belive that would be compatable witha JP, as you only have a 30g

I'm with him ^ BP and JP get along well, I have Angels with mine

Is it a blood parrot or a jellybean parrot?

If it is a blood parrot, a 30g tank isn't big enough for it alone.. if it is a jellybean you might be able to get away with some rainbows if they can swim fast enough

Thanks guys. It's a regular pink jellybean but I don't intend him or her to stay in the 30g it's destined for a 90g eventually. This is just an interim plan. Whats a JP?

Jelly Bean Parrot

Well, if you are moving up to a 90, I'd go with a Red Devil, Serverum, Blood Parrot or a Flowerhorn.

I wouldn't put a red devil or flowerhorn with a jellybean.. severums are nice though, so are blood parrots, maybe even convicts, but considering jellybeans don't get very big I wouldn't trust a huge devil or flowerhorn with it.

Don't remember were I read this article, but if you get to aggressive fish, and one will get bigger than the other, get the one thats smaller bigger than the one that gets bigger. Then, the bigger one, when it gets bigger, will respect the littler one. I dunno were I read that though...

Although that was confusing lol ..I know what you are trying to say..

Put a larger jellybean in with a smaller flowerhorn.. I still don't think I would try it.

Thanks again everyone. I should have mentioned that my 90g already has a frontosa in and various catfish, so obviously the JP will have to be a lot bigger before trying them together. The frontosa is a gentle chap with other fish, in the past he's had a few smaller cichlids for company and he's really good. Still, we'll see, I shall be standing ready with a net to rescue JP if necessary. In the meantime perhaps the JP could have a smaller severum for company or a smaller Blood parrot.

I MIGHT be worried about the jellybean attacking the frontosa.. 90g is a good size tank though so you might be ok.. frontosa are african cichlids and normally prefer higher ph.. what's the ph at? I know some stores keep their africans at neutral just cause it's easier, and the front might have been at neutral it's whole life.. just curious

Our water is around 7.5 to 8.o pH and doesn't change much so it's good for the frontosa. I have a pair of sajicas in a 45g and they thrive on the high pH even though they are south american. I've tried adding peat in the past to the filter but it doesn't make any difference to the pH and nor does bogwood but most of my fish are quite bit, fronty is around 8 inches now so I reckon they've all aclimatised. Can't put the jellybean in with the sajicas as the male is a killer apart from his female.
