Forgive me if this sounds stupid... but do you think bettas or fish in general are capable of feeling jealousy? Or is this a predominantly human emotion? Reason being... I just found a 1 gallon critter keeper that I used to keep crickets in, and there's an empty spot for it on my computer desk... however, my computer desk is already occupied by Austen in a five gallon. Do you think that if I put a betta in the critter keeper and filled up that empty spot on my desk, he would get jealous/depressed? Would that be cruel?

I don't really care what anyone thinks, I for one think intelligant animals (like bettas) can feel emotions.

Many people would disagree, but well... so what?

Edit: As for the tank size change, just see how he takes it. Some of my fish don't mind going from larger to smaller spaces.

Styx, I don't think he was moving his current betta, but thinking of getting another one. ;)

It should go pretty well, if anything should happen you can always card them to prevent them from seeing each other and only let that happen for a certain amount of time each day. And if one gets jealous, get a plant for the empty space [Bettas love to flare at plants! At least.. mine do.. :look:] and move the new betta to your night table!

I'm not sure about fish, but anyone who has ever owned multiple dogs will agree jealousy isn't predominantly human!

Funny you should mention that, little, cause there was a plant in the critter keeper too! And I do have 20 some odd pounds of smooth pea gravel still... how can you regulate temperature in the critter keepers?

Oh, and yeah to clarify, I'm debating getting another betta, not moving Austen. He's perky where he is. :D

I have a small female betta in a 1 gallon kritter keeper, a male in a 1.5 gallon fish bowl, and two males in a divided 10 gallon with 5 gallons each. They all seem really happy where they are. I kind of let them rotate in each spot and see how they did in each space they were in. Then when I saw when one looked comfortable, I would leave them there as that was their new home.

My male finally made a bubble nest in his 1.5 gallon bowl. So I know he is happy. :p

I think they'd be crazy not to enjoy the 1 gallon kritter keeper, I mean afterall, they WERE crammed into a small cup just before you would put them in their kingdom.

I would go ahead and get a betta for the kritter keeper.

Hi!
If you were to get another betta, just consider the upgrade he'll be getting from his silly little cup to the critter keeper!

The big thing with a tank that size is obviously the temp... the tanks i have are all at least 2 gallon - and the heaters I use are the flat stick-on-the-side-of-your-tank Hydor Mini Heaters...

HOw warm is your house? I'd say if he would be going into a 1 gallon keeper, just leave him at room temp unless you get down below 72 degrees. If you do go lower than that, I would consider skipping it, or getting a bigger tank to put him in besides the 1G tank. That can always be a tough one with heating...

And as for animal emotions - I think they really can feel emotion, and probably even jealousy. For instance, I have 2 tanks side by side at work. One has Jasper in it, one has Charlie. They both are the idential sized tanks and have pretty much the same stuff in the tanks. Whenever I"m paying attention to one of the boys, the other one will stare at me with his fins drooped staring. I don't know if he's having fun watching me look like a big ol' tard talking to the other fish, or if he's supremely jealous of me spending time talking to and playing with the other fish. I'm just not sure.

ALSO.....
With my (RIP) little boy Amos, I know he loved me. He, to date, is the only fish that would genuinely be beyond happy when he saw his momma show up for work in the morning,or at any other time for that matter.... He would always flare at me when ever I appeared - whether it be that I went to the Diet Coke machine and was returning to my computer, or I had been gone for a long weekend. There were SO many times when he swam just as fast as his little fins could carry him over to the side of the tank where I was, flaring on the way because he was so excited to see me. I miss that lopsided little flare every day. I wish my other boys would adore me that way, but Amos was just special. He too, along with my other 'misfit betta crew' probably knew that only I could really love him unconditionally - with or without their little flaws.

Man, I miss that little boy every single day. :/

Don't forget mini-reptile heat pads, they're good for very small aquariums.
