Java Moss

I ordered 2 clumps of java moss for around 5 bucks. I was wondering how all of you anchored your moss to the ground, I plan on trying to grow a carpet on the bottom of my rocky substrate, starting by achoring it on various rocks in my tank, letting it grow, then taking a small chunk of off each and spreading it around. Also, considering my water is hard, and I read in several articles that it likes soft, will it adapt alright? Should I acclimate the thing like a fish? Those of you who have any insight please do comment
