how long does it last and when do you know it's dead? mine is sort of starting to turn a little brownish. thanks for letting me know. just got it last night. :/ i have fake plants but wanted to try real. any suggestions for live guppy fry to hide in? besides the java moss

The browness could possible be algae or due to a lack of light. Give it a good shake in some water and if it is algae it should flake off, if not then it needs light. Seeing as how you have just obtained it, if you have sufficient lighting then give it a week or so and see how it goes, if you don't have good lighting then obtaining some should see some improvement. Hope this helps some.

Just like any other plant when it starts turning brown and breaking apart.

What is your WPG?

Our Java Moss is in .7 WPG and is doing great.

WPG? what's that.. i am not too familiar with all the aspects of keeping plants etc

WPG means watts per gallon. Make sure it has good lighting and maybe some ferts would help, by the sounds of it the Java Moss isnt getting the nutrition that it needs.

I'm stunned and amazed......

java moss never dies in my tanks - just keeps growing

It also survives well in low light - unless you re keeping it in full darkness it should have enough light

I'd do some water changes - have you added medicines? if so filter with carbon to remove

Is it definately java moss? did you get sold some land moss by a dodgy dealer?

Honestly, it shouldn't die and need replacing EVER

i just took it out, I'll try again in a few weeks. i got it from petsmart....
