Java Fern; How Fast Does It Grow And Other Q's?

I'm new to plants and I thought I would start with something easy like java fern.

There are five separate small pieces (that look a little beat up) that I will be attaching with thread to a piece of mopani wood (hopefully) this weekend. It's in a 7 US gallon tank with 9 watts of light. I plan lighting about 8 hours a day.

Are java ferns fast growers? If it takes me a little time to find a piece of wood, will the plant be OK in the substrate for the short term? Should I spread out the java fern on the wood? Anything else I should consider?

Java Ferns are slow growing plants and relatively easy to keep.

Try and sit the rhizome on top of the substrate for now.

In optimum conditions, how slow is slow. Eg, 1 cm a month?

I have no idea, but it grows a lot slower than my stems.
