What fish do you have in this tank? Unnescessary salt can be detrimental to more delicate fish's health. If there is nothing wrong with the fish now then you don't need to add salt. If you have sick fish then move those fish into a quarantine tank and treat them there. It adds stuff to the water and increases the osmotic pressure. If you have fish that prefer soft water and you add salt it can stress them out, if you have fish that like hard water, depending on how your water is, it can help reduce some stress by making the water a little "harder".

I know diddly about bettas as they don't really intrest me so I've never kept them. But, personally speaking, my policy is to add the bare minumum to my tanks as possible, the only chemicals I add are tap water conditioners.

From what I have understood is that bettas prefer softer water. Adding salt may or may not hurt them and it may or may not help them. I would suggest against it unless they get sick or come down with parasites.

I'll assume you know what you're doing with salt and bettas... or that one of the betta people will come and set things straight.

But java fern is nigh indestructable, so you're all good there...

you could probably leave java fern in your driveway in direct sunlight for a few weeks and it'd be fine...OK, exadurating a little, but you get the idea.

Bettas are very hardy, and can even tolerate brackish water conditions. Salt keeps fins from rotting, velvet or ick from attacking plus it keeps their slime coat healthy.

As I said, i know diddly about Bettas. I read a few snippets about them and they said they prefer soft water but they were probably talking about wild-caught specimens, not to commercialized fancy versions.
