Well after an endless cycle, I've decided that the only way to get going is to get fish.

So I got 5 danios and 5 glow light tetras as well as a male Betta.

All planted up, nice water change and in they went danios are very lively, tetras schooling together and the Betta is having a nice explore

I'll keep an eye on ammonia, I hope I'm established enough to cope.

Next week, 6-8 blue guppies, and eventually a couple of electric blue rams. Eventually.

Very nice looking tank Ron, unfortunatly it looks far too small for Danios. They do not get very big but require long tanks, 4ft plus, to be happy.

They seem happy swimming against the current from tr outflow. I was told they'd be a hardy fish to start off my system with.

if you'er fish in cycling, you shouldn't be getting blue rams for quite a while. It also seems the foot print is too small for them, but some exact dimensions would confirm or deny it.

Blue rams are very fragile, they'll die for the most ridiculous reasons, or for no visible reason at all. definitely not a fish to have without an established filter.

be aware that bettas and guppies also have tendencies to fight one another. I'd honestly ditch the guppy idea and get some more glow lights instead once the filter is established.

People have said about bettas and guppies, but my other male Betta and two rainbow guppies have lived happily together for almost a year now without incident.

I wouldn't risk it, still bettas are all individuals, and the whole guppy with betta thing is like a once in a blue moon thing. It doesn't even have to be the betta bullying, sometimes even a spartan guppy may go after the long fins of the betta

Plus, a big school of glow light tetras is absolutely gorgeous with a tank with those dimensions it would be better to get one big school rather than a bunch of small ones imo.

it is big enough to keep german blue rams, but yeah, wait til your tank is stable before adding them.

There's also the fact that guppies and rams really prefer different water conditions to consider. The guppies would prefer hard water and don't do very well in soft, while the rams (like the tetras) do best in soft, acidic water.

Hold off for a bit before adding to your stock Ron Jeremy. If things go well, you can increase stocking soon enough but if it does not go well the added fish will simply swamp your efforts to keep the water in proper condition.

Hope you are testing your water stats daily and doing daily water changes if you are not cycled?

I am cycled, my ammonia and nitrite are dropping back to 0 quickly. I'm not sure how much the filter can handle in bio load, so I'm doing regular checks and changes. I have a plumbed in system for draining and filling via a hose and I have plenty of water conditioner in.

24 hours in, ammonia and nitrite are now 0.25ppm. Doing a water change as I type this and adding more conditioner.

I'll test every 24 hours. Fish are happy still. Happier than yesterday
