I 've been given the present of a 24x12x12 tank and a big box of bits ...however in the box is a Fluval 230 filter and all the pipework....... I'm wondering if this filter is suitable for this tank.. At the moment I'm wanting to keep costs down until I get my tank established.so i dont really want to go out spending my cash without reason......... thanks in advance for your help, I've been reading all the post and learning !

You can use the Fluval that came with the tank....did it come with an instruction manual as well?...if not...let us know and we will try to help you as best as we can in regards to setting it up and media etc.

In the meantime....do some reading on fishless cycling as well as cyclign with fish...I prefer to cycle without fish....for humane reasons but everyone has different opinions on this.

Let us know how you get on

WOW .. thanks Chooklet .. i wasnt expecting a reply that quick... what a response.. yes it did come with the instructions... so I'll get it set up soon and start cycling .......just one other thing ....it sounds a bit noisy when plugged in .. will this noise go when it gets water in it , it recently been fitted with a new impeler ..

Word of caution.....you should not run the Fluval filter without water in it....itf you keep doing this this can break the motor....(so my Fluval manual tells me anyways). This is why it was making noise (it needs water to run). It should be fine though....just don't run it without water in the future.

Fluvals make no noise once they have water running through them...the instructions are pretty easy to follow but if you have any question don't hesitate to ask.
