Heya guys, iv had a Juwel rekord 120 101L x 46H x 31W cm (39" x 18" x 12") 120 litres (37 us gallons or 25 imperial gallons)
if i got rid of all the neons and small fish, would i beable to keep a senagal birchir with a bolivian ram who is about 3" and a BN plec? Tank decor is a sand substrate, 2 largish peices of bogwood and plants both live and fake, just askin for a little advice and if i cannot keep a birchir any ideas what else i could keep, it can have the tank to itself i am not fussed about returning the rest of my fish.

Filtration is standard juwel box but i updated it to 600lph instead of the 450 it came with

a birchir will anything that fits in his mouth so your ram could get eaten. and i think on his own could be fine. but ive never kept them but sounds good to me. someone back me up on this?

I think there are different sized birchir, but all will eat other fish. Some grow VERY big so please think carefully about purchasing one.

According to your tank's specs, I believe you have a 37 US gal tank, which meets the minimum 30 gal required for a senegal bichir. As for the ram, I guess as long as it's bigger than the bichir's mouth, it'll be fine. Same goes for the BN plec, but there are some issues of plecos sucking on a bichir's protective mucus; you might wanna read up more about it. I personally have a senegal bichir and an ornate bichir, as well as a plec; so far no sucking issues lol.

well thats good news :good: i have always wanted to keep oddballs but being younger i didnt think i would have the tankspace, i dont think i will risk it with the ram, i will return him they have got a big new world cichlid tank at my lfs and they man has been looking toa good size ram to introduce into that, im away on holiday for the next week, but as soon as i come back i will start to return the fishes. As for the BN, he is only 2" at the moment, and would probably look quite apatising so i will put him in another tank untill he grows and then move him in with birchir maby and look to see if there is any problems.

Personally... i've seen suggestions to be at a 40 gallon minimum- but i'd suggest around 60 gallons at least. The ones i've had (and currently have..) aren't full grown, but they still need a lot of space. I've seen an almost full grown one before.... it wouldn't even really fit into a ten gallon.

If your bichir doesn't actually eat the ram... it may just kill it at a good size.

30 Gallons will be fine for a senegalus.

Just keep an eye on your BN as they can some times suck the polypterus' slime coating, I've kept BNs and an L001 with mine and they are fine.

I currently have 2 senegalus and a delhezi in a 32gallon (they are going in my new 120gal tank though) anything over 3" should be fine, as bichirs are not agressive preditors, they are more scavenger predtors, although they will take sleeping fish.

Dont keep with agressive cichlids as they cant protect themselves.

I thought they could, and know people who keep them with Oscars, but I've seen Oscars eat Senegalus, and Delhezi's arent much bigger than Senegalus.

An oscar has a LARGE mouth

they will live together when the oscar is like 5-8" but 8"+ oscars get a big mouth. soo he could get eaten of they could be bestest freinds! you will never know without trying.

Biggest size Oscar at 16" which is unlikely, Senegal 12"ish. That would be a huge mouth and stomach for the Oscar to eat the Senegal at adult sizes.

The tank size is fine for a senegal but i wouldnt keep it with the plec and ram
