you know when you play with little metal toy cars on a hardwood floor? my filter sounds like that. but louder and more noticeable. and is getting hard to sleep at night. what is the noise?

the filter is an aquaclear 40-70 gallon filter.

As Ryefish has said, that is the sound of an air leak on the filter inlet. You need to search for what joint is allowing some air bubbles to get into your filter. It takes very little air to make one heck of a racket.

how old is the filter?

could it be time for a new impeller?

filter's 2 years old. i looked for air bubbles and can't find any. sometimes that filter is loud, sometimes it's quieter than a mouse.

Sounds like air 2 me especially as it comes and goes
Here's what I would do.
Make sure the outlet of the filter/ pump is fully under water and leave the pump running. When u hear that really loud toy car on the wooden floor check the outlet to see if there are any air bubbles coming out of the outlet pipe if so you def have a air leak. If you can not see any then it must be sumthing else (maybe there is atually someone playing with a toy car) you could be du 2 replace the impeler.

If it is air then disconnect everything and check for any cracks or splits in piping, check for cracked or dry seals. Try this and get back 2 us with a update

doesnt sound like that... i didn't know the people that play with the toy cars could silently get into my house so easily - they've done it every night this week!
