Hi all i have got to tell everyone i can't help myself, today i ordered my new tank a clearseal 72x18x18 it has set me back £273 which seemed to be an ok price compared to some quotes i got for tanks in the local area, i have been told it will take 3/5 weeks which gives me plenty of time to build the stand, i can't wait :hyper:

Will do Ox, i am going saltwater reef and i am really looking forward to the challenge any advice along the way would be a massive help, i am still strugging abit with filtration, i was thinking along the lines of a fluval 404 along with loads of live rock and a skimmer, trying to avoid a sump if i can.

Did you try boss aquariums? You could get a 6x2x2 delivered for that price.. i think. Unless they have changed their prices. Congrats BTW

Once the tank has cycled. switch your filter mediums to purigen, rowaphos and carbon.

This should keep most parameters in check.

Good luck. You might need 2 externals for a tank of this size though. The return feeds can be used as powerheads or for surface agitation.

if i have two filters could they be smaller then, the fluval 405 says its good for 100gl. the 305 is apparntly good for 70gl x 2 i then have 140gl does that sound better, its way more expensive as the 305 is only slightly cheaper than the 405. i will be getting about 40k of live rock would that help?

Regards

Andy

6x2x2 i could'nt i just do not have enough space, well maybe i do but i am pushing it with the other half, i had to stop somewhere i would have done the lengh of the wall if i had my way which is about 8ft :hyper:

thatd be one hell of a job to clean!

edit:(the 8 footer, althought the 6 would still be a job to clean;))

i have the fluval 305 on my 30g.

Dont forget that the live rock will be the most important part of the filtration.

I use my 305 to keep phosphate and nitrates in check. All ceramic media is removed and i will probably do the same with the filter sponge on the next clean. Or just wash it in tap water to kill its bacteria.

Powerheads are important for flow around the liverock.

I would recommend the koralia series by hydor. They have a diffused flow and run very economically.

I woudn't try to avoid the sump if I were you. They're great. You could get a bigger skimmer, hide the heater, have more water volume, more surface agitation, and turn part of it into a 'fuge. I wish I had one on my 37g. :(

I would also recommend the koralias, but for such a large tank you may want something like a closed loop.

Hi all

Powerheads, i was thinking of running three, would this be enough? Having trouble priceing them up at the moment, not really sure about positioning them, do they go one at each end and one in the middle, all pointing in one direction at the live rock or in different directions from the middle or what? Do i really need three? or is it more the better?

the more the better in my opinion more fail safes and more current direction, hydor 3's are about 36 quid on ebay last tiem i checked quite a while ago! they pack quite a good punch just ensure that you have alot of flow aroudn live rock so to eliminate dead spots and a bit of surface agitation is good.
