wow, i used to think all DIY projects looked tacky, homemade and aesthetically unpleasing...but lately, after looking at some awesome projects and the quality of the build, it seems that ive caught the DIY bug people! I think i'm going to build a undergravel jet system, a wet/dry filter and a new aquarium myself. anyone have any similar experiences? What made you start to DIY?

Being left to my own devices at home with tools when I was a kid. Aquatics is just an extension of all the stuff I have been doing for over 40 years. Stands, racks & filters are easy. I am looking for some water tight 5 gallon buckets with removable lids, preferably with a gasket. Giant home made canister filter idea.

oooo, my dad did that with 5 gallon buckets. i forgot what they came from, but they have an pour spout on top near the middle that you can pull out. it might have been a paint can or vegetable oil bucket.

if you want you can pm me for the instructions of an in tank and above the tank wet/dry. But id only use the in tank wet/dry for mangroves tanks because it can be covered by sand banks. The above wet/dry just needs a pump, then you get a industrial strength shelf for the sump, make a rectangular opening in the sump and it flows through the top of the aquarium (this can be done by poping out the filter space in most aquarium hoods)
