what does isolating a particularly aggressive fish actually do?

how does it benefit the fish or indeed the other fish? :/

Well it dosn't stop the fish being aggressive, you only remove them if you have fish that are injured bythe aggression, then you have to think what you are going to do with the fish, rehome it, or buy it another tank, and place fish that are compatiable with it.

It benefits your other fish by not being harrassed in your tank where they have no way of escaping.
