Went to my lfs today to have a look an saw a beautiful young oscar but it was 15 pound and I though it was abit much as it was only 1 1/2 inches, and I looked at a firemouth and it was 25 quid each :S

Is this too much? Or the average prices?

Also (sorry posted in the wrong section for this but) Is 20 pound for a musk turtle too much aswell?

If the Firemouth was an F0 or F1 then it should have great colouration and would be worth £25. At the end of the day though they are all worth however much you are willing to pay for them. By the sound of it, the Oscar was good looking so if you like it then it is worth it IMO.

Pricey imo.

F1 Firemouths at my lfs when they had them in the other month were about £13 a piece and they were a good 3.5"-4" in length.

Oscars can vary, 1.5" should be priced at around £7-£8 imo, especially considering that not everyone can offer them a suitable home so may be hanging around for a while.

at my lfs their f0 oscars 5" (estimate)are only £10

Hmm well this oscar was amazingly beautiful with bright orange and stunning coloration but I know its pricey but this oscar was different, perhaps it'll be an early Christmas present.
The firemouths were 3 inches and they were normal.
They also had pacus for a tenner, How big do they get?

i've read that they can get up to 1 metre

Ooh well they guy in shop sold a women and her daughter a pacu and said they stay small and will live a long time in their 54 litre tank

Lol gotta love an lfs

To be honest a nice Oscar is worth that amount I paid 35 for a 6 inch red velvet

Well I value fishes lives more than money, hence why I have quite a few tanks and Im always at the shop.
I think I will go for this oscar as its a stunner and its coming from good stock.
Is there a method on buying an oscar and telling its aggressiveness?
And as for him selling the pacu - all I can say is hes a liar as I asked him how big they get and he told me 18 inches but I still wasnt sure.

Liquid Skills... F0 is a wild Oscar... You sure?

Chris, Wharf tends to be on the expensive side for Oscars imo, but on the other hand i guess it keeps them from falling into someones hands who goes in with a tenner.

I believe if you want the fish in question then it doesn't really matter if its a bit more expensive than the others. That's as long as you can house it properly with good filtration, Oscars do make a mess.
I don't know if there is a way of guessing the aggression, I've had various fish before that went from good behaved to bad, and from bad to good as well.

Average round here would be between £5-£10 each....if F0, F1, then they would be more expensive.

i get what your saying mate but also at the size wharf sell them at you rarely see them that size anywhere else

If you look around you will usually find some a fair bit cheaper. Maybe not at an LFS but definately not uncared for either.

They have some crackers in, which are stunning, but sometimes their prices are very OTT imo. But still, it's probably the best LFS around that sells such a wide range of fish. I loved the Mbu Puffer they had a few weeks back. Totally amazing.

Shame you didn't get to see the huge Flowerhorn they had in also... First time i had ever seen a 'proper one' in real life and was in awe of it!

Oscars are about £4 in all of my lfs, Firemouths about £2.50, hell Aureus are only £4.50 and they look better than any wild Firemouth.
