ATM I have a 40g tank. I've had it now for about 6 months. In my tank I have

2 parrot fish, about 3in long
4 long skirt tetras
1fantail, about the same size as the parrots
1 molly, 2in long (newest addition)
4 cory cats
2 chinese algae eaters
2 fancy guppies
1 6in picosamus(not sure on spelling but he's an algae sucker)
1 Betta

So far everything gets along fine, the local petshop owner was surprised nothing has bothered the beta, and that the parrot fish are getting along with the fantail, but as far as I can tell every body seems to be fine. I'd like to add 3-4 bala sharks and 1 oranda, anyone think they might cause any problems, or that I might get into an overcrowding issue? I am using a 60g filter, so I don't think that will be a problem. Thanks.

the parrots will grow, so will the fantail

chinese algea eaters will get big and very agressive also. The pleco will gro past 12 inches also

I think you are already overstocked, considering the future growth of your fish.

Bala sharks grow too big for a 40 gallon tank, let alone 3 sharks.

You should try to getrid of the fantail and the chinese algea eaters and also the pleco. The pleco you can keep until it gorws but it will bne hard to get rid of it if it is too big

Agree with above. Fine at the mo but if you work out 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, once your fish are fully grown then you will be overstocked. Plenty of time to sort things out though.

Bala sharks get to 14 inches, and ive seen it they get big. You need atleast a 120 gallon to house balas. What you have now is overstocking in the end.

I think you need to decide which fish you are most attached to and go from there. The two parrots alone and maybe an algae eater. Keep the fantail and switch to cold water. Get rid of the goldfish, parrots and CAEs and stick with the livebearers and/or tetras.

As has been said, no on the balas. The oranda is fine if you decide to switch to coldwater and keep the fantail.

Fishkeeping is frustrating at the start. Often times our fish stores will stock our tanks with completely incompatible fish and we end up almost having to start over, but if you start right you'll be much happier in the end (as will your fish ;) )
