Hey guys,

I recently bought THIS aquarium stand. I put it together, and now that I'm looking at it, I'm kind of nervous to put my tank on it. As you can see, there are only platform-like bars around the edges and nothing in the middle. That really makes me nervous. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a stand like this?

This is made by penn-plax, a well known brand, and marketed as being able to support two fairly large tanks.

I think it'll be fine.

tanks are usually only supported around the edges so a frame like that is fine as it supports only the edges

Thanks for the confirmation guys. I figured it would be safe...I was just nervous and wanted reassurance :)

Hi BrookeLea :)

SirMinion is usually right about this kind of thing, but after looking at the picture of that stand, I would be nervous about using it too.

The thing that worries me is that it needs a cross bar in the back to make it stand upright. This reminds me of a shelving unit I have that leans sideways if you put any pressure on the narrow side of it. Of course, 55 gallons of water pressing down on the top will probably counteract that kind of thing. :dunno:

If I had one of them and could exchange it for the one piece, rigid type, I would do it. I've been using them for years with no problems at all. If you have a Petland Discounts lfs near you, which is an East coast chain, they sell them as a combo with a 55 gallon tank for just $89. You can't beat a deal like that!

Errm,

My old one, which was pretty much like the same in design as yours, only felt truly safe once I had added an extra tank to the bottom.

It felt as though it was never going to be stable without an extra tank. Well, thats what I told the Wifey anyway...... heh heh...

Sub.

The diagonal bracing will stop it shearing along the long sides, but I would be happier with a diagonal brace along the short sides as well. That said, I have not seen the thing, and if it is a known and reputable make, I suppose...

Best excuse ever!
