I saw this stuff at the PetCo next to my work. I was wondering if it would be okay to use in my 5 gallon tank with my ADF frogs.

I'm wanting to get them sand substrate, but there is only one package of aquatic sand (which is marine sand, does that make a difference?) that is under $10, and it is opened and spilling. So I looked around in the reptile stuff and found this.

It says the ingrediants are as follows:
Calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, iron oxide, beta carotene, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12, biotin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl), niacin, riboflavin, vitamin B1 (thiamine HCl), folic acid, dicalcium phosphate.

And the description as follows:
All natural vitamin-fortified calcium carbonate substrate increases calcium delivery in desert species of reptiles.
Fortified with vitamins and beta carotene for increased health benefits.
Does not contain fat-soluble vitamins, which can be toxic in large doses.
Ultra-fine grade to prevent impaction from overconsumption.
No artificial colors or color sealers.
Excellent substrate for bearded dragons, uromastyx lizards, monitors, geckos (including leopard geckos), and desert tortoises.

They also had this kind. Which after reading the reviews on the first kind might be better. The reviews said that the first kind dyes your animal and that it is dusty. All the reviews on this kind were good.

So were either one of them okay to use in my ADF tank?

Is that a "Yes", a "no", or an "I don't know"?

I'm going to work tonight and would like to pick up some sand for the frogs. But I don't know what kind to get. Since they only have the stuff for lizards/snakes and then marine sand.

I wouldn't advise it, it will seriously mess with your ph and thus cause the frogs a lot of stress if you use it as a substrate.
Also, it contains things which (although i'm not certain) which will poisen the water quality.

I use regular play sand. It is cheap enough and if you do go with it, it needs to be thoroughly washed before putting in the tank. Good luck!

Okay, my mom has some "Tube Sand" (the sand they put in bags to put in the back of your truck/pickup in the winter to help weigh the back end down). Is that the same as play sand? I remember doing a chemical test on it back in high school, but I can't remember what was determined....

I have no idea whether its safe to use or not, but if you wash it it might give some sort of idea on whether its safe to use or not- if the water turns really yellow/brown and kinda frothy/bubbly, then it probably isn't safe to use.

If it's the same stuff I have for my truck...I wouldn't use it. That stuff is nasty. LOL

Honestly, if you are looking for a goos sand to use, head to your local home center (Menard's, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace...what ever) and pick up some sand blasting sand or head to your pool place and get pool filter sand.

I'm using sand blasting sand, also called silica sand. This stuff is nothing more than small pieces of glass. It's very neat to use and cleans up nicely. :) Just be careful when you vacuum, as it's really easy to suck some up. :)

Sand blasting sand shouldn't run more than about $5 per 50 pd bag.

The problem is getting out to a place like Home Depot and Lowes (and then talking my husband into letting me buy more stuff for my fish  ).

I'm guessing if I shouldn't use the Tube Sand that that means I'll just be waiting for a long while to switch to sand. Gas costs too much to drive out just for sand.

 Hopefully, it won't be that long...Combine the trip with a juant to the grocery store...that's what I do to my girlfriend. :) It's always..sure, let's go...but, I need to stop by Menard's real quick. Of course, the grocery store is right next door, litterally, to Menard's. :)

I never would have used it before, but I thought I would try it. Now...I'll never go back. I have one last gravel bastion in the house, and that will go away too. :)

The only problem is the grocery store is less than five mintues away from here and the closest hardware type place is around 30 minutes away. And they are different directions as well.

I was really looking forward to getting sand in at LEAST my ADF tank... I've been thinking of switching my 10 gallon over too, but I doubt my mollies and Glo-fish really care much about the substrate. Gravel hasn't been bad at all in the 10 gallon. But I think the ADFs would appreciate smoothness on their bellies as apposed to kinda pointy.
