I was woundering what I was going to put for garavel in this bowl that is going to house my betta.... I have a collection of freshwater snail shells that I got from Lake Erie. I was hoping to put those in instead of gravel for the bottom of this bowl. I was woundering if it would alter the water conditions to the betta's unliking. Would the betta hate a alkaline water quality?

Probably be a bad idea. They prefer soft water anyway, and the shells will eventually dissolve and make it too hard and high ph'd.

They might be full of bacteria and they could be too sharp for a betta to be around--they could cut up it's fins and such. I would not use the shells in my tank. Too risky!!
