Hi Guys I hope you can help. In my tank i have 3 Julii cats and 3 peppered. The peppered are fine. But my 3 jullii cats after doing a water change, now swim vertically then back down and up again. they keep repeating this and i dont know why! Is this normal?

The 3 peppered seem fine.

I thought maybe t was because they were getting use to the difference in water temperature between the exiasting water and the new water i just put i.

i did around a 50% water change.

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Sam

When you say swimming up and down vertically, are you talking about them swimming up and down the glass? Mine do this everytime I do a water change. They get really active. Cories are very curious fish and I think they are just excited and trying to figure out what is going on.

Also, if the cories are young, they will swim like that for hours.

Yes they swim up and down the galss, i have not seen them do it before. I was worried somethign was wrong. I used tap water conditioner and everything, so i hope that they are just curious.

My new sterbai babies were doing the cory dance, when I came to feed them this morning. Loaches/botia do it too. I am expecting my Petrocola Synos to do a weak imitation. It really is called the loach dance. I believe they do it when they are happy which a water change will cause.

Cory will also gulp air from the top, fly back down to the bottom then let the bubbles go, in short Cory are mental!

But entertaining :)

Yeah, but remember, they should not do that on a continuous basis. If they are constantly doing it, it could be a sign of lack of oxygen in the water. They do often at they eat to help them digest their food. I see mine do it every once in a while, but not all the time :good:

If I see my cories gulping air I do a water change.

We have been informed by a moderator and some members that some of the air they release is actually from farts! So funny :fun:

Remember that one way to induce breeding in cories is to do a sizeable water change with cooler water. Evidently the cooler rains of fall trigger breeding inthe wild. Maybe they're just displaying a little.

True, I think there is more than one reason for the behavior: They play, they display, they spawn, they gulp air for oxygen to digest and to get oxygen in oxygen deprived water. So the trick is to observe our little friends so we know which behavior they are displaying, don't you think?

Is it fall in SA? If not then it is the snow melts that trigger the breeding behavior.

So i shouldnt be too worried. Yeah i have seen both peppered and julii cats gettign air from the top. The water seems very clean so i dont think there is a lack of oxgyen in the tank. I also have an air stone in there.

p.s can someone please tell me how you put a quote in your posts, i.e the box it puts in of what someone else has said

cheers

I think the air gulping surface dart is different than the dance behavior.

cheers

There is a "+ QUOTE" button in the blue box under the box you want to quote. click that and then click the relpy button. The quote will be in the answer box. You can also click the "REPLY button which will bring up a reply window with the quote in it. Actually I suck at it. Others seem to come up with more tricks than me on this one.

You can erase any part in the quote you want or change anything in the quote.

Like I don't know how I did all the quotes in this answer, just play with it :fun:

Ok cheers. I hope the above comes in a quote box now.

Nope.

Click the "REPLY that is in a blue box under the post which you want to quote. See if you get a reply box with the quote in it.

Sorry I'm a little odd. Must be why I like Cories. :shifty:

You can always right click your mouse and copy/paste. But it doesn't come boxed or gift wrapped.
